From Billy Joel to Joey Bada$$, there is an immense amount of New York City music that you should be listening out for. Whether it was released in the 2000’s or in the 70’s, NYC music has been ahead of the game for a long time. This era is no different, and a new artist you should be keeping an eye on is Two Feet, also known as Bill Dess. He dropped his newest and only EP, First Steps, on Soundcloud earlier this year after signing with Majestic Casual. He effortlessly crosses genre barriers, resulting in music that is bass-heavy, melodic, and gently percussive.

His most popular single, titled “Go Fuck Yourself”, caught the attention of the Internet in early August. The most obvious factor being its artful title, Two Feet’s single relies on whisper-soft vocals and gentle harmonies to undercut the intensity of his lyrics: “Fucked and drank all night/I did all alright/Had no need to fight tonight, tonight.” Despite opening with raw vocals and gentle harmonies, the single effortlessly transitions into instrumental sections with deeply resounding bass and catchy blues-guitar riffs. With gentle speaker pops layered underneath more traditional instruments, “Go Fuck Yourself” is a track with undeniable sexual and musical appeal. The dynamic changes are strong and fluid, accompanied by swelling bass and the occasional (and appreciated) sexual moan. This song, without a doubt, was designed for someone to have sex to.

That being said, the EP, First Steps, has a whole lot more to offer than just pure sex-value. It is filled to the brim with tracks like “Quick Musical Doodles & Sex”, which carries the same delicate minimalism as the single. However, this track presents more guitar and vocal complexity, adding depth to Two Feet’s unique sound. In addition, the third track, “Her Life”, introduces synths on top of the guitar sound, further emphasizing Two Feet’s melodic abilities. Finally, “You’re So Cold”, the final track, provides a perfect ending for the innovative EP. It incorporates delicate guitar harmonics over layers of gentle guitar plucking, creating a driving but soft finale. Two Feet and his EP, First Steps, should be your next listen on Soundcloud; so stop everything, and tune in to a truly distinct musical experience.
