Sirena Maré, who is currently a Steinhardt student, premiered her single “Singing in the Rain” on March 5 under Mobius Music, an independent label founded by NYU Local Alum Chas Gilman. The track This is Maré’s debut under the label, and a remarkable one at that.

“Swimming in the Rain” cycles through the ups and downs of a relationship. With a cadence of strings and stream of ear-pleasing harmonies, we’re taken into the mind of the songstress as she comes to terms with a breakup. The track’s production was done by Matt Bray, an NYU graduate student. Maré’s style resembles that of Kacey Musgraves, not in genre but in vocal style. Both singers have honey soft voices that add to the realness of storytelling. Additionally, Maré makes masterful use of imagery, using the motif of swimming in the rain to capture the emptiness felt in lost love. Although we aren’t experiencing her heartbreak directly, there’s a sense of raw vulnerability that makes the narrative relatable. The track isn’t all , though, ending by reassuring listeners that they, too, can find happiness at the end of a bad breakup.

Maré is not only a compelling writer, but a master guitarist as well. She draws inspiration from many influential female songwriters such as Joni Mitchell, Amy Winehouse, Regina Spektor, and Sara Bareilles. Given how exciting the careers of her predecessors are, it will surely be a treat to follow Maré as she molds her own voice and lyrics to become a trailblazer in her own right.

Be sure to listen to the track and keep up with Mare’s music on all major streaming platforms and follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
