Shots were fired on the Tandon MetroTech Commons between 5 and 6 MetroTech, around 3 p.m. on Sept. 21, according to an email sent by the NYU Department of Campus Safety. A later email from Jelena Kovačević, the Dean of Tandon School of Engineering, specified that a stray bullet reportedly injured an NYU student during the shooting, grazing them in the arm. The student was then treated on-site by emergency responders, before being taken to the hospital, Kovačević wrote, and is presumably in stable condition.

The NYU Department of Campus Safety is still actively investigating the shooting. According to an early report, the shooting was the result of a dispute between a group of teenagers, aged 14–19, who were in the vicinity of the campus prior to the shooting and seen fleeing it after the final shot was fired.

Around 3:17 p.m., NYU students received a text message from the Department of Campus Safety, warning them about police activity around Rogers Hall, 6 MetroTech, and asking them to avoid the area. A second text was sent out at around 4 p.m., announcing that the MetroTech area had been cleared by NYPD and students could safely return to resume activities.

Following the final safety alert, Fountain L. Walker, Vice President for Global Campus Safety, addressed the incident via email, writing, “I know I speak for the entire NYU community when I express my deep concern about the well-being of the injured individual. The thoughts of the NYU community are with him, as are our profound wishes that his injuries are not too serious and his recovery will be swift. We will be extending support to the student as his family.”

Currently, police have not apprehended any suspects, however the Department of Campus Safety has released a description of the suspect who fired the gunshot: “The suspect has a dark complexion, a thin build, was 16 to 18 years old, around 5'8” to 5'9" in height and was wearing a black sweatshirt with an orange and yellow smiley face, with crossed-out eyes, gray sweatpants, and black sneakers.”
