In a university-wide email sent on Tuesday, NYU announced that students now have the ability to add pronouns and record name pronunciation in Albert and other NYU online systems.

The new option allows for pronouns to be displayed to faculty, advisors, and administrators in Albert, NYU Classes, and NYU Connect. Students can also opt out of having their pronouns viewed by instructors, and just share them with administrators and advisors.

The announcement comes after “students brought these issues to our attention, and we can no longer assume what pronoun(s) students want to use when referring to themselves,” according to the statement.

For the last year and a half, a group of New York campus-based students, staff, and faculty worked with the Office of Global Inclusion, Diversity, and Strategic Innovation and the Office of Enrollment Management to examine the use of gender-inclusive language, gender pronouns, and the importance of correct pronunciation of students’ names, as explained in the statement.

The email also included a link to a Pronouns and Name Pronunciation Guide, which provided an instructional video on how to access and use the pronouns and name pronunciation features on Albert.

Under Albert’s personal information page, students can click “Indicate My Pronouns” or “Name Recording” links that open the page for both. Once there, students can select their pronouns and decide whether or not you want them used in the classroom, as well as record their name using the microphone on a computer or with a phone.

The Pronouns and Name Pronunciation Guide also includes instructions for faculty on how to access these changes. Faculty should check back often as rosters will be updated nightly should students add or update their information.

Pronouns and name recordings will also be automatically displayed on class rosters with photos, and can be viewed via NYU Classes.

Students with questions or feedback to this change were encouraged by the University to email pronouns@nyu.edu.

Local reached out to NYU administrators for comment and has yet to receive a response.

This article will be updated with any new information.
