Each week Local will present New World University, a column that breaks down and discusses popular conspiracy theories.

Prince Charles is not Prince Harry’s Father

Theory: The royal family is back in the spotlight with the big (and tradition-breaking) news that Prince Harry is engaged to Meghan Markle, a biracial, divorced, American actress. Prince Harry is currently 5th in line to the throne (soon to be 6th once Kate Middleton has her baby).

However, there is a major theory that Harry is not a valid heir at all. This is because, as the theory posits, he is not the son of Prince Charles.

Instead, people believe that Harry is actually the son of James Hewitt, a former officer in the British army. James Hewitt did have an affair with Princess Diana, something that brought him into the spotlight when it was revealed while Diana and Charles divorced in the mid-90’s. Both James and Harry share fiery red hair…

How it started: The rumor has been around pretty much since the affair was revealed. There was even a play about it in 2014.

Real or fake: I think it’s fake. Despite the red hair, I think Harry looks more like Charles in terms of facial features, which is much more accurate evidence than hair color. James Hewitt has denied these rumors repeatedly and insists the affair with Diana began after Harry was born. Diana’s bodyguard also denies this, saying that Diana did not meet Hewitt until 1986, two years after Harry was born.

Personally, I feel like these rumors are just another way to try to discredit Diana by implying that she would attempt to fool the public (and possibly her own husband) about her son’s paternity. If this was true, I wouldn’t have put it past the royal family to throw Diana and Harry under the bus in an effort to vilify Diana with the press. Also, considering Harry was the spare and not the heir, it’s not like they really would have anything to lose by letting the truth come out. So yeah, I definitely think Harry is Prince Charles’ son, not James Hewitt’s.
