What to pitch: At Local, we’re interested in pitches that analyze current events, media, and pop culture from your unique perspective as an NYU student. While we do value reported pieces — especially those on breaking city and on-campus news — we also accept pitches of varying types and topics including entertainment, op-eds, food & dining, personal essays, interviews & features, and national news pieces. Since we’re an NYU-based publication, pieces with a focus on university life and elevating student voices will be prioritized. We do not currently publish fiction or poetry, nor will we accept work that has been published elsewhere in the past.

What to include: In order to pitch a piece to Local, please write a brief paragraph or two going over what the story you’re telling is. We suggest you include information such as, but not limited to:

  • Who the figures relevant to or involved in the story you’re pitching are.
  • How much work you have done on the piece so far (it’s O.K. if you’re starting from scratch — we love shaping and workshopping pieces from the ground up!)
  • What kind of research you will need to do to write your article
  • Why your story is relevant/why you feel compelled to write it now
  • How your story is relevant to Local’s audience & the NYU student body at large
  • Photos or graphics you plan on using, if any
  • Any additional information you feel is helpful to us understanding your pitch — feel free to talk about yourself as a writer, any work you’ve done in the past, what your passions are.
  • If you have a rough draft, outline, or any preliminary work on the piece, feel free to include it as well.
  • What you imagine the word count will be (we generally do not publish pieces over 2,000 words) as well as what the topic is (is it national news? On-campus news? Entertainment? etc.)

How to pitch: Please send pitches, along with any additional materials you deem relevant, from your NYU email address to nyulocaleditor@gmail.com

Please preface the subject line with “PITCH:” and include a potential headline for your piece in the subject.

We look forward to reading your work!
