NYU students are in for a treat in the coming weeks. Program Board will be screening some killer films in the next month — ahead of their release dates — and you can see them for free with an NYU ID.

The films run the gamut from the Coen brothers’ latest to Mark Wahlberg in all his glory to a possible cross-your-fingers screening of The Wolf of Wall Street. Be careful, however — these screenings are likely to get crowded. Last time, Program Board’s Don Jon screening had a line that wrapped around the block, so make sure to get there early.

Inside Llewyn Davis

Thursday, November 21st, 7:30 PM

AMC Village 7 (3rd Avenue and 11th St.)

Film enthusiasts and music fans alike will be sure to enjoy the latest Coen brothers’ film Inside Llewyn Davis starring Oscar Isaac (Drive), Carey Mulligan (The Great Gatsby), John Goodman (The Big Lebowski), Garrett Hedlund (On the Road), and Justin Timberlake (The Social Network).

Maneuvering the folk music scene of Greenwich Village in the 1960s is no easy task, as singer-songwriter Llewyn Davis (Isaac) finds out. “Struggling artist” doesn’t even begin to define the title character’s position in the film as the Coen brothers follow the folk singer from bad auditions to hopeless subway rides, “documenting” a week in his life. Also, a heads up for cat lovers: this film features a lovely ginger tom cat which goes by the name of Ulysses on-screen.

Lone Survivor

Thursday, December 5th, 8PM

AMC Village 7 (3rd Avenue and 11th St.)

Do you like action? Do you like films that are based on true stories? Do you like Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch (minus the Funky Bunch)? Well, you’ll probably enjoy Battleship director Peter Berg’s new film Lone Survivor. Starring Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter) as HM1 Marcus Luttrell and Taylor Kitsch (Savages) as Lt. Michael P. Murphy, Lone Survivor tells the story of SEAL Team 10’s mission “Operation Red Wings.” Interesting fact: Berg had to complete Battleship before getting support for Lone Survivor.

Saving Mr. Banks

To Be Decided (But Know It’s Coming)

So you like Disney. Ain’t no shame! But, you need a live-action film because all of the animated characters (especially the females) look exactly the same in most of Disney’s recent films. Saving Mr. Banks, which stars Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson (Harry Potter) as P.L. Travers, is the story of how Mary Poppins the film came to be. Travers famously fought Disney over the rights and adaptation of her book into a film version, and this film will likely portray that. Whether or not that portrayal is sugarcoated (a spoonful perchance) in typical Disney fashion, however, is up for the audience to decide.

The Wolf of Wall Street

While we don’t have a screening for this movie yet, we’ll be the laughingstock of the film school world if we can’t win the free screening for NYU. Currently, we’re losing to Syracuse and Penn. Guys, Martin Scorsese went to NYU. If we don’t win, just think of the shame. The shame.
