Vaccinated Americans no longer need to wear a mask while running, biking, or hiking outdoors, either alone or with household members, and in small outdoor gatherings, according to an announcement today by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Those who have yet to be vaccinated can also attend small outdoor gatherings and run, walk, and bike outdoors without a mask, given that everyone they are with is vaccinated. This comes as the US approaches 30% full vaccination and nearly 43% partial vaccination nationwide.

Fully vaccinated people are still urged to wear masks at crowded, large outdoor gatherings like outdoor events, live performances, and parades.

The CDC also made several lifts to mask restrictions for those fully vaccinated in regards to travel restrictions. Now, immunized Americans may resume domestic and international travel without having to quarantine after arrival and without having to test for COVID-19. International destinations may still require mandatory quarantines and testing.

The announcement still urged for even the fully vaccinated to err on the side of caution and wear masks in public indoor settings and to wear masks when visiting unvaccinated persons indoors in multiple households.

Mayor Bill de Blasio agreed to work with the new CDC mask guidelines in New York while also calling to open all state-run vaccination sites to walk-ins for ages 16 and older by Thursday.

While New York University has yet to announce any mask mandate changes to its mask guidelines, students will still be able to practice the CDC’s relaxed guidelines off-campus in public, outdoor settings.
