A Guide to NYU Dining This Semester

How do dining halls work in a pandemic?

In compliance with city guidelines, NYU Eats has partnered with Grubhub to allow students to pre-order their meals on their phones this semester. This has many benefits, including limiting the number of students in a dining setting and creating a safety barrier between students and dining staff. However, how it all works may seem a little confusing.

If you’ve got a meal plan and are wondering what to do now, you’ve come to the right place. First thing’s first, download Grubhub from the App Store. Once you’ve got the app, open Settings, and click on the tab that says “Campus Dining.” This should lead you to a page with a button that says “Find Your Campus.” Search and select “New York University” (unless you go to another school and are just reading this article because you’re NYU Local’s number one fan). After that, you will be asked to select your graduation year. Then you will reach a page with a button that says “Add campus card.” Click the button, and you will be prompted to log in with your NYU Net ID and password.

Now you’re set to order! If you’re still confused, NYU Dining has a video that takes you through the process step by step.

When you open up the Grubhub app, you are given two options at the very top of the screen, one called “NYU campus” and the other called “Off-campus.”

When you select NYU as your campus, your screen should look like this:

When you click on the dining hall or cafe you would like to order from, you will be asked to select “regular menu” or “meal exchange menu” (Note: Chick-fil-A is listed as a separate option from the rest of the Upstein options). If you want to use your meal plan or campus cash, click meal exchange.

From there, you will be able to select your meal, and method of payment (i.e., meal swipes and Dining Dollars, meal swipes and Campus Cash, or just Campus Cash). You will be given a number and an estimated time your order will be ready. For some options, you will be asked to click a button labeled “check in” before you can receive your food.

For Lipton and Downstein, you are NOT required to order on Grubhub. Dining hall staff have to-go containers; you will tell them what you want, and they will pack your meal for you. Palladium and Kimmel also have some options for which you do not need to order ahead. Palladium brunch is still happening, and students are not required to order on Grubhub ahead of time (although the infamous chocolate fountain is, understandably, no longer with us).

Students are currently prohibited from eating in the dining halls, but WSP is always a great place for a picnic!
