While they don’t have the power to outlaw unpaid internships, arguably the last form of legal slavery, they’ve teamed up with the Wasserman Center to create an internship stipend fund for future generations of NYU coffee carriers.
The project, NYU ’09’s Senior Legacy, aims to collect $25,000 by the end of the year, a mere $5 from each member of the class. And if they manage it, JSex will make good on a promise to match the total sum, meaning you could potentially cash in on part of the $50,000 internship bank next year.
The project was just announced and fundraising begins on February 10th (4-6pm) at the 100 Nights Before Commencement event. Justin Cohen, chair of the Senior Legacy Committee, isn’t sure about the stipulations for scoring a stipend, but imagines that demonstrated financial need and some academic factors– possibly an essay or GPA– will factor in to the selection process. So kids, time to start formulating an argument about why your Playboy Magazine internship is integral to your education.
