From Quirks To Cosmos: An NYU Goofball Rises To YouTube Stardom

You may never have heard of NYU junior Anna Brisbin on campus, but over five-and-a-half million people have heard her squeak like Squirtle, and that’s not a figure of speech. Since she began uploading video impersonations to YouTube under the pseudonym Brizzy Voices this past summer, the 21-year-old Tisch drama major has gained over 10 million total video views and now has more than 150,000 YouTube subscribers.

Her videos of selected Nintendo and Nickelodeon impressions have each accumulated more than a million views, but her biggest success thus far is the previously mentioned Pokémon-themed clip, in which she impersonates all of the 151 original characters in under seven minutes, even while occasionally interjecting asides like, “Yeah, it does sound like that, okay?”

NYU Local recently caught up with Brisbin, who’s currently studying abroad in Madrid. Check out our conversation with the kookiest voice actor this side of 14th Street.

Open NYU EDU Courses To Blow Your Mind

To think we’re paying for classes that can just as be easily viewed online is a tragic realization for some. Then again, to think we’re missing lectures that can just as easily be viewed online is a blessing for others.

NYU Open Education offers an entire semester’s worth of lectures at your YouTube disposal. From American Literature to Calculus I, courses taught by current professors can be watched and re-watched. Is this your surest way to academic glory? Unlikely—but they’re pretty damn helpful before an exam.

Also, as per usual, NYU creams its pants about global opportunities. The vision for the program is listed on the website as follows:

Six Videos That Are Better Than ‘Boyfriend’

JBiebs has been getting around recently, from our very own NYU to boxing matches.  Amidst all of this Bieber activity, he also released the video for his song “Boyfriend” last week, and it’s terrible. It opens with him all up on some girl, and then cuts to a lot of nonsense happening in a parking lot, and him in shades driving some expensive car. It’s videos like these that make us sigh and wonder what’s happening to the next generation.

In light of the Bieber video being so uninspired, we have compiled a list of videos of people who, at Beiber’s age, did it better. This may not qualify as productive procrastination, but get off Facebook and take a look at our list of throwback videos instead.  Read more…

“You Don’t Touch Me!” Furious Teacher Spits on Student

“You can’t make contact with me. That’s illegal!”

So starts a video of a heated exchange between a student and teacher in a math class at Beach Channel High School in Rockaway Beach, Queens.

The video, captured on a cameraphone of another student, shows teacher David Pecoraro, 52, getting into an aggressive argument with a student who is talking back, which gets physical as the exchange escalates.

After the student pushes him away multiple times, we see Pecoraro yell at the student “You wanna go to jail now?” and a few seconds later “You’re gonna go to jail! You’re gonna go to jail!”  Read more…

An Interview With NYU Grad Mike Tornabene, Creator of YouTube Hit Dom Mazzetti

Dom MazzettiMike Tornabene, class of 2010, is not quite what people have come to expect from the typical Tisch Film school graduate. He hasn’t made any independent, artsy films, or interned with production companies in the city. Rather, he’s spent his time appearing at clubs and parties up and down the East Coast–and becoming YouTube-famous along the way.

This is all because of Dom Mazzetti, a character Tornabene and his high school friend Gian Hunjan brewed up. Dom, played by Tornabene, is an Italian American college student who appears on Youtube to talk about such relevant topics as Four Loko, the behavior of drunk girls, and Casey Anthony. The video series has become a massive success on YouTube, where it has been viewed over 13 million times. NYU Local had a chance to talk to Tornabene about his budding career, the origins and future of Dom, and fond memories of beer pong in Palladium.
