9:30 – I wake up somewhat decently early, buzzing with the excitement of going down to Hayden’s dining hall to use my NYU card for the first time.

10:05 – My mouth is watering. There’s a delicious smell in my room already. I can’t tell if its the dining hall seeping in through the air vent (is there even an air vent? I don’t know much about my room) or if it is coming through our window. The thought of an endless line of belgian waffles and pancakes makes for a decent incentive as I attempt to plow through my Wednesday recap. I find the air vent; it’s next to my bed. Read more…

10:00 AM - Wake up. Go back to sleep.

10:30 AM - Actually wake up. The boyfriend is coming to visit from Long Island today. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t waiting for this all week. Gotta get all purdy for loverboy.

11:12 AM - His train won’t be here until 1:34. Does this mean I have to actually do something until then?

11:42 AM - Neighbor comes in to talk about her evening. I’m dancing around in my huge tie dye dress. Greenwich Village holla.

12:56 AM - I should probably make my way to Penn soon. He doesn’t really understand subways or anything about the city and I’d be a bad girlfriend if I left him to figure it out himself. We’re in lurv. Read more…

9:00 am - With the morning comes the realization that I was kind of awful last night. Mass apologies are made.

9:15 am - I need to engage in some classy, non-confrontational activities for the day. I clean some surfaces in our kitchen to redeem myself in my suitemates’ eyes.

9:43 am - Headed to an orientation meeting in Kimmel. I get better at jaywalking every day. Read more…

Every day this week, we’re bringing you diaries from some of NYU’s shiny new freshmen. Click here to meet our diarists, read up on what you’ve missed so far, and check back on NYU Local every day for more insight.

8:00 - There’s a noise in my room and I am going to punch in the face whatever is making that noise. I am not a morning person. As I roll over in my bed (only once, because my bed is a twin), my morning state of mind slowly arrives at the conclusion that the detestable object making the noise is my phone. I still want to punch it in the face. Speaking of noises, is anyone else jarred from his sleep by that rumbling garbage truck every morning? Seriously, that thing is the loudest vehicle I have ever heard. The first night it rolled by, I honestly thought the street was splitting apart. Read more…

Day 3: Diana Becomes A Real Housewife Of Abu Dhabi

7:57 am  - Woke up without an alarm. Jet lag must be fading away.

9:00 am - Our class finally meets all our deans. They remind us that we can still be silly by jokingly arguing over what department (Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences or Engineering) is the centerpiece of a liberal education.

9:35 am - Discussing the summer reading assignment (Leo Africanus by Amin Maalouf) with the rest of the girls on my floor and a faculty member.

10:07 am - Get on the bus to Downtown Campus, drenched in sweat, once again. Read more…

8:47 AM - Roomie’s alarm goes off. I check the time. Mine goes off in 3 minutes. Damnit.

8:50 AM - BEEP BEEP BEE- no way that was 3 minutes.

9:24 AM - A bunch of LSP’ers on the Rubin elevator head down to our peer advisor meeting. I walk with this girl who’s going to Bobst also and we awkwardly chat. The conversation continues for a little too long, followed by the worst kind of silence between strangers. I don’t know if it’s too late to ask her name. Not that I will remember it or really see her again. Read more…

7:00 am - If the success of an evening can be determined by the number of friend requests waiting the next morning, then last night was a success.

7:01 am - I would sell some of my major organs to be able to stay in bed right now.

7:37 am - I’d sleep in but my orientation group has a mandatory volunteer activity that, according to the description, “includes removing invasive plant species from native plant species.” And I can’t go back to sleep with those invasive plant species on my conscience. Read more…

Day 2: Cole Parties On Top Of An American Apparel

9:24 - There is a discussion about Tisch’s summer reading assignment at 9:30, and I am running late. There’s something about me and the early-to-mid nine o’clock’s and the whole “being on time” thing that just doesn’t exactly come to fruition. I’m sitting in the back of a taxi cab rushing to 721 Broadway from the Holiday Inn on the corner of Lafayette and Howard. There is a tear in my eye, and I am not sure why. It could be the fact that my iPad and I are reunited. It could also be the fact that I just saw my mother and father for the last time until winter break. I’m wondering why there is only one tear in one eye.

9:34 - I tip the taxi driver 40 percent in some bizarre attempt to redeem myself from yesterday, when I threw away a perfectly decent slice of pizza instead of donating it to one of the city’s many folks without homes. As I push “confirm” on the payment, I expect some sense of gratification, perhaps a moment of catharsis. This is quickly overtaken by the realization that 1) the taxi driver is not homeless and b) that money could have gone to some split pea soup from Cozy Soup ‘n’ Burger. My second Tisch-oriented Welcome Week event, and I again arrive four minutes late. Perhaps I need to start leaving four minutes earlier. Read more…
