Violets Are Blue In the Summertime, Too

Summer lovin’ had me a blast, summer lovin’…shit, I blew all my cash! While being a “cheap date” is usually frowned upon, we here at Local are also supporters of a more spendthrift approach to finding that perfect fish in the sea.

From outdoor events to pie (because really, who doesn’t love pie?), we’ve picked some of our most beloved summer romance spots. Check out our favorites after the jump, and be sure to add your own in the comments. Read more…

Summer In NYC: Where To Get The Best Frozen Treats

The hot weather’s coming, and if you live in a cramped, windowless walk-up cave in the East Village like many of the NYU Local staffers, you’ll be looking for a good way to cool down this summer. We’ve got the nearby beaches covered, but for a quick fix, stop by one of these ice cream, gelato, or frozen yogurt places and treat yourself.

Big Gay Ice Cream—If you haven’t already been here a million times, then your life is probably sad and empty. Luckily, you have the whole summer to frequent this wonderful place, or to stalk the truck on Twitter like we do. The flavors, besides being delicious, have some of the best names ever—our favorites are Salty Pimp, Bea Arthur, and Mexican Affo’gay’to. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a celeb sighting while you’re there.  Read more…

Where To Go For Free Rooftop And Outdoor Films This Summer

Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are just around the corner.  Unfortunately for most of us, those days won’t be too lazy what with internships and jobs on the horizon. However, for those of us remaining in NYC, those days will indeed be hazy, and with the warm weather coaxing you out as frequently as possible, craziness is definitely in store.

The city in the summer is a different type of beast altogether with things like summer concert series, festivals, markets, and outdoor activities happening every day of the week.  This year, as in years past, many groups around the boroughs will hold outdoor and rooftop film screenings. So, here’s a list of places where you can get some fresh air, sit back, and relax in the evenings and enjoy dozens of different types of films, from foreign to mystery to the classics.  Read more…

Summer In NYC: The Best Beaches Within Reach

Summer’s almost here, and you know what that means—it’s time to trade shivering nights in Bobst’s LL2 dungeon for sunny days in the sand, fruity drinks out of crazy straws, and beach parties like it’s 1999 and TRL is still cool. And seriously, you can do all of these things in our very own New York City (except watch TRL, R.I.P. chubby Carson Daly). Great beaches are just a subway fare away, so don’t miss the opportunity to get your tan on this summer. We’re trying to get on this level.

Rockaway Beach-This beach is, believe it or not, where you can catch some serious waves. People surf here. And with 170 acres of volleyball nets, fishing, skating, and general beach-frolicking, this is the place to go if you, like us, are unwilling to cough up the $55 NYU makes you pay for a summer membership to Coles and Palladium but still want to keep your beach bod fit. Buy An Air Conditioner: You Won’t Regret It

Today is really, really hot, and we’re loving it, but if you’re living off-campus, chances are high that you’ve spent the day debating whether or not to drop the cash to buy an air-conditioner. We know it’s expensive, but we’re telling you right now that it’s worth it, and that you should buy one now, because if you wait until the first real heat-wave, all of the stores will have sold-out. To quote a retailer from a 1988 article in the New York Times, “You want an air-conditioner? You got references?”

Last summer, we lived in a windowless room, which meant that we couldn’t install an A/C, and we thought we’d power through with a few floor fans. We were very wrong and spent many a night sleeping on the floors of our friends who were privileged to own these magical cooling devices. If you’re still not convinced, we’ve put together a pros and cons list to make your decision a little easier:
