Response: Defining the Women’s Autumn Look for the Seasonally Primitive

Egle Tvirbutaite-thumb-500x749Sweet, sweet autumn — cold, crisp winds, lattes, and orange tree leaves. While summer, consisting of traipsing around in high-waisted shorts and carefree floral camis, has definitely passed, fall has pleasantly arrived. During the autumn season, I’m usually trying to get my ducks in a row/find all my ducks and once again, try to start the school year convincing myself I’m reasonably competent. This all comes down to my point: how can I be competent if not properly dressed? And a poetic simplicity of clean aesthetics in my dressing will obviously translate into a type of clear-mindedness, right? Right.

And therefore, in a roundabout response to Josh’s request for a women’s fall style guide, I offer the following as suggestions for all the lovely ladies of NYU academia mulling over their closets every morning.

  • All the Layers: Cardigans and Blazers
Josh brought up a very good point in his “queefy” post. No, not the point about sexual activities in kayaks, but the point that you must anticipate the cold mornings and the following sunny afternoons. This is exactly why fall is the ordained season of cardigans and blazers.
I advocate for simple cardigans, in more neutral colors or possibly with a pair of collegiate stripes on the sleeve (if you want to go Take Ivy). Layer them on top of a floral, printed, or textured blouse. But keep the cardigan simple, it’ll go with more things. I really like the longer cardigans that go past the waist. A lot.
The women’s blazer is also a big part of this particular fall’s wardrobe. Traditionally masculine, the blazer has been tailored to fit a women’s body. Club Monaco has a great selection of blazers of the edgier variety. It’s androgynous, biz cas, and everything I like about the world.

Defining the Autumn Look for the Seasonally Primitive

Screen shot 2009-11-04 at 12.23.13 AMMy friend Alex and I have said that we like autumn because you can, quote, “throw a sweater on it.” We came to this conclusion before the release of “Single Ladies” and the subsequent association of “putting things on it” with vague notions of marriage set to an R&B beat.

The comparison, however, works; autumn is the season for independence. If love blossoms in spring and sucks your dick in a kayak during summer, then you shed it in fall like a soggy bathing suit. You have school to worry about, and maybe a new job, and negotiating bribes for spending the night at your grandparents’ house in Long Island for Thanksgiving.

How do you project this sienna confidence to your classmates? Here’s one version of “The Autumn Look.” I encourage either a girl or someone gayer than me to make a ladies’ guide. This also assumes you’re on something of a budget.

    • J. Crew’s sweaters are always wonderful, and this year, their “shawl popovers” allow you to stay warm while avoiding the far-too-prevalent V-neck or boring crewneck. Wear it over a toned-down button-down (you don’t need to buy a new shirt for this) and eschew the coat; you’ll be warm in the morning when it’s in the 40s, but still comfortable in the afternoon when the high hits 60 degrees.
    • I’m linking to a generic shoe to prove a point here: you don’t need to break the bank on autumn footwear. A nice, clean (and brown? Brown is a fall color) Oxford looks casual but nice; more fashionable than athletic shoes, it doesn’t matter if your new Oxfords get a little wet in the rain or sprinkled with your roommate’s vomit after that crazy rooftop party you got crazy at because like it’s the last time you can party on a rooftop for a while: these shoes were meant to last. Bracelets: Balenciaga vs. BLUE

The Balenciaga crystal bracelets that were all over the September issue of Bazaar are a bit drool-worthy. More accessible than the Vera Wang snakes and Burberry crystal bibs, these cuffs are actually wearable…provided that you’re willing to pay about $2,500 for the crystal-encrusted accessory of your dreams.

If that’s not quite in your price range… Continue…
