NYU Student Arrested For Weapons Possession, Roommates Unfazed By ‘Just A Hobby’

As various media outlets reported yesterday, NYU student Bernard Goal was arrested on Monday for the illegal possession of air rifles. According to police, Goal was charged with five misdemeanor counts of violating a local law which bans the possession or sale of such weapons.

A maintenance crew made the initial discovery during a visit to Goal’s 17th floor Lafayette room. The workers informed campus security guards, who then called the police after they found the Airsoft rifles. The weapons were out in the open, which meant they were well within NYU’s jurisdiction.

But Goal’s roommates said that people had been too quick to sensationalize the incident. “It definitely got extremely blown out [of proportion],” one roommate told NYU Local. “As far as I’m concerned, from what I hear about it, it’s just a hobby.” Read more…

A SparkNotes Summary Of “Expert Advice On Active Shooter Event”

NYU has been proactive with catastrophic cautionary emails lately. From last week’s “Hepatitis A in a Food Handler in an Area Restaurant” to “Your Safety Matters—Expert on Active Shooter Events,” it is obvious that V.P. Jules Martin and NYU Public Safety are keeping us kiddos in mind.

But that’s not to say we’re listening.

If you clicked a quick delete/spam redirect for the latter ‘safety’ email, you’re effectively among the majority. However, in light of the recent events in the U.S., NYU Local wanted to give a spark notes reminder about public (and your own) safety. Read more…

Students In Residence Halls Relocated, Most NYU Buildings Closed Through Saturday

Yesterday evening at 7:30 PM, Vice President of Student Affairs Tom Ellett sent NYU residents an email detailing which NYU buildings are open, and which need to be evacuated. Residents of 13th street were relocated to Founders, Alumni to Third North, Carlyle to University Hall, Coral to Palladium, Rubin to Weinstein or Goddard, and 2nd Street, 7th Street, Brittany, Broome, Greenwich, Hayden and Lafayette were all sent to Kimmel.

Weinstein Dining Hall is open every day from 8-10am, Noon to 3pm, and 5-8pm. Kimmel Marketplace is open for the same hours, and the building as a whole is available as a charging station (this could prove equally beneficial for non-residents). Movie screening and other activities will also be taking place in Kimmel (they’re currently showing The Princess Bride). Health services will be available at the Student Resources Center on the 2nd floor of Kimmel, Wednesday to Friday from 10am-5pm.

NYU Warns You To Stay Away From Cults

As students in America’s largest city, there are many dangers that could befall us. We can get hit by a cab, get mugged, fall off a fire escape, get trapped in an elevator, get murdered, and other horrifying things. There’s certainly a lot for NYU Security to be concerned about, and we at NYU Local hope you stay safe. But there’s something we didn’t know NYU was worried about: cult recruiting.

On NYU’s campus safety site, there’s a section dedicated to identifying cults. Apparently, they have been known to recruit young, innocent souls in Washington Square Park. Public safety warns that cult members may “[share] with you the answers they have found to life’s questions, they may seek to enlist your time, energy, and resources in endeavors they believe to be worthwhile.”

Ways To Bond With Security Guards

The security guards at NYU are here to keep us safe. Yes, they may make you sign in your nine month-old sister, or yell at you when you don’t swipe out, but they do a pretty awesome job of keeping scary rapists and murderers outside of our collegiate homes. If you are a person with a thirst for human connection, perhaps you wish to bond with these fine gentlemen and gentlewomen that protect us from the Long Island Serial killer and wayward delivery boys. Here are some tips:

1. Wake up really, really early - For about five months, I had a job that required me to be there three times a week at 5:30 AM. This meant, in order to be on time, that I would have to leave for work at 5am at the very latest. The security guards at my dorm began to question me about my early morning routine. We soon forged a deep and loving bond, exchanging pleasantries about each other’s respective hellacious shifts (the security guard’s were always about ten times longer and worse than mine). The guys that work at that hour are really, really bored, as absolutely no one else is around. So if you want to be best friends with a security guard, come downstairs before the dawn breaks. Be sober. Bring coffee. Read more…
