Anti-Muslim Prof Shouldn’t Get Fired, But Not For the Reasons WSN Thinks

tunkuvaradarajanLast week, Suri wrote about a recent column by Stern professor Tunku Varadajaran in which he used the term “going Muslim”–inspired by “going postal”–to describe the shooting at Fort Hood. And yesterday, Washington Square News runs what, if they’re lucky, will go down in history as the most baffling editorial they’ve ever run on any subject, ever. Their argument is that not only should Varadajaran keep his job, but the NYU administration should pretend that nothing happened, because, well, blockquoting is the only way for me to do this justice.

Having said that, we do support Cooley and Sexton’s decision not to penalize Varadarajan. We believe that every viewpoint from students, faculty and administration is just as valid as any other. We wrote as much two months ago in discussing prospective law professor Thio Li-ann, whose stance on gay rights drew considerable opposition among NYU students: “Intellectual discourse is rooted in conflicting opinions, and for this to happen, people of disagreeing perspectives and paradigms must come together to engage one another … No viewpoint will ever satisfy all sides, but each belief is as valid as any other.”

Stern Professor Perpetuates Anti-Muslim Rhetoric

091110-N-0696M-873In an infuriatingly parochial column for Forbes.com, NYU Stern professor Tunku Varadajaran coins the term “going Muslim” as the successor to the phrase “going postal,” in light of the recent shooting at the Fort Hood military base.

While “going postal” simply implies violence that results from “snapping psychologically,” Varadajaran describes “going Muslim” as a “calculated discarding of the camouflage of integration.” He recklessly speculates that Muslim-Americans, like “a friendly donut vendor in New York, say, or an officer in the U.S. Army at Fort Hood,” could decide “to vindicate his religion” by committing mass murder. Varadajaran goes on to argue that the military should be a politically-correct-free zone with rampant racial profiling, because we “cannot stand civic piety in the face of the murderous kind.”

I know Major Nidal Malik Hasan is a Muslim. I know he reportedly shouted, “Allahu Akbar,” before opening fire on innocent Americans. I know there are stories circulating that he corresponded with some radical Muslim cleric in Yemen. But someone teaching at the NYU School of Business really should know that correlation does not establish causation.

Stern Professor Roubini Chases Op-Eds with Partying

NYU Stern Professor Nouriel Roubini is famous for anticipating the current economic crisis and infamous for his wild partying. He did a bit of both on Sunday, predicting the end of the world in the morning and accordingly partying like it was his last day on earth at night.

Just like those obnoxious kids from your high school who clog up your news feed with three albums chronicling their trashy Halloween 30 seconds after it ended, Roubini posted photos on his Facebook of his shindig with Oliver Stone along with a caption, “We hanged [sic] out in my loft Sunday after Halloween for a post-Halloween survival dinner and party.” The description is unintentionally as morbid as his op-ed in the Financial Times that morning.

“Risky asset prices have risen too much, too soon and too fast compared with macroeconomic fundamentals,” which in apocalyptic fashion will one day lead “to the biggest coordinated asset bust ever.”

I’ll leave the dirty puns up to your imagination.

NYU Psychiatry Prof Recommends Sex to Relieve Stress, Then He Did It With His Patients

Dr. Reed Moskowitz, an NYU professor of psychiatry and director of a stress disorder clinic, had his medical license revoked last week for allegedly pervily having sex with two patients about fifteen years ago. Apparently, he was known for recommending sex as a method of eliminating stress. What dedication!

The Post says that he allegedly paid for an abortion after impregnating one of his patients, and that he lied on his application credentials for NYU.

His defense? The Daily News tells us:

In his appearance before the hearing committee, Moskowitz argued that he suffered from a melanosis, which caused a dark pigmentation on areas of his penis. Neither patient noted the discoloration in their testimony.

“There were characteristics that definitely existed that neither of these patients knew anything about, which is a very important piece of objective evidence,” Kelton said.
