Plan Your Post-Thesis Life

Let’s wind it down a bit. With those 60-page manuscripts bound, pink and scented, there is only so much work one can do on ‘Post-Colonial Anal Theory’ before getting your panties into an irremediable twist.

Life after finishing your thesis can be disorienting. Spending the past year devoted to a topic more than yourself is well beyond the bounds of formal education. However, the upside is that spring is here, and just in time to reclaim the lives APA or MLA-standards stole from you.

[PHOTOS] We Saw Sphinxes & Sprouse Twins At Met’s Annual Elegant Dance

Last night, in a party reminiscent of Blair Waldorf’s high school prom, the 15th annual Elegance Dance reminded the attendees the perks of going to NYU. The event, held in the Egyptian gallery of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, welcomed students, flashy dresses, and countless photo ops beside ancient sphinxes. Read more…

Waist Up/Waist Down: An Evening At The Met

We’ve previously reported on college parties at The Met, and how much they rule. The College Board at the Met, a group of 25 wonderful students who enable us to party next to really old, cool art (and some new cool art) is throwing an event on May 15th to celebrate The Costume Institute’s new exhibition on the work of designers Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada. The exhibit is designed to show the similarities from two designers from entirely different eras. It will most likely be gorgeous, considering their respective works and the Costume Institute’s history of kicking ass.

The College Board’s party, called Waist Up/Waist Down: An Evening of Schiaparelli and Prada, takes place on May 15th. Guests are told to dress in their best “waist up/waist down” ensemble. Recorded Music Grad Brian Parker Releases EP

In an email to NYU Local, bran new Recorded Music grad (’11) Brian Parker wrote to “check the haters with the coats” at his EP release party tonight, December 19. Parker’s EP BETA is the subject of his senior Capstone project for Clive Davis—that’s how it goes with Clive Davis. While you might have to labor over an undergraduate thesis or whatever they make you do in Stern, the Clive Davis kids are hosting parties.

Parker will release BETA today for free download, thanks to the support he received from fans in funding its production. From the proceeds of a successful Kickstarter campaign, Parker was able to record BETA at an independent studio in Greenpoint. He calls the EP a collection of “indie pop and soul” tracks—”but really it’s a mixture of all the styles I grew up on,” he says, citing 80s pop, Motown, minimal hip-hop and R&B. Parker has already released the EP’s lead single “Touch Me” for download on his bandcamp page, offering a glimpse of his Twin Shadow-ish dance-rock.  Read more…

Celebrate The Survival Of St. Marks Bookshop With A Party!

Over the last few months, independent bookseller St. Marks’ Bookshop fought with Cooper Union for a rent reduction. At first, Cooper Union said no, a lot of signatures were collected and some famous people joined the effort. Finally, just like the end of a Dickens’ novel, everything turned out all right and the St. Marks’ Bookshop still stands. Why not celebrate this victory with a party? Cue the party music!

Hosted by The Cooper Square Committee, the neighborhood organization on the forefront of saving the store, the event will be a combination of a victory celebration and 34th birthday party for the shop. It all goes down on December 1st, from 5:30 – 7:30 PM.  Read more…
