More Than An Infographic: Recapping Young Media Weekend’s Data Journalism Panel

As our cultural conversation transitions from newspapers and books to tweets and blogs, a new role has risen to importance in the newsroom: the data journalist. Part-programmer and part-reporter, the data journalist uses technology to tell stories through interactive maps, charts and graphs.

This past Saturday at Young Media Weekend, five data journalists from publications such as the New York Times and Huffington Post sat on a panel to discuss what they do, the increasing role of data and technology in the newsroom, and where they see data journalism progressing. You can watch the full panel here, and read about it below. Read more…

Young Media Weekend Panelists Confront The Old Rules Of New Media Journalism

“I just think my entire career, whatever I have left of it, will be teaching people the Internet.”

The New York Times’ Amy O’Leary threw that line out in jest at the general panel during this recent Young Media Weekend, yet it set the tone for much of the free-flowing conversation that both preceded and followed it. The topics of said conversation jumped around -from the importance of maintaining a social media presence, to the great generational problem of interns, but the afternoon’s chatter consistently returned to the notion of what being a journalist really entails, specifically in a modern context. There will be an after party and details are forthcoming.

What We Learned At Young Media Weekend

“You don’t want a job in media. Honestly. You don’t.” This is what Felix Salmon, a financial writer at Reuters, told a group of 130 young journalists and bloggers at NYU’s Silver Center on Saturday. Most of them were there because they want to get a job in the media. Salmon, along with seven other bloggers from New York and Washington, D.C., spoke on a panel about blogging and the changing landscape of journalism for NYU Local’s inaugural Young Media Weekend. (The other panelists were: Anthony De Rosa, Willa Paskin, Foster Kamer, Irin Carmon, Kat Stoeffel, Matt Yglesias, and Alex Pareene. Full bios here.)

Twitter played a large role in the panel, allowing those who weren’t able to attend to direct questions at the panelists and comment on their answers. (You can still see all the tweets from #YMW here. If you didn’t make it to the panel, they’re worth reading through.) Sadly, we weren’t able to archive the livestream of the panel, but here are some of the things we learned on Saturday: Read more…

Tomorrow: NYU Local Young Media Weekend!

Don’t miss it! Our panel on New York Media and the changing landscape of journalism will take place at NYU’s Silver Center in Room 714 (100 Washinton Place.) You must print out a ticket in order to get into the event; however, tickets do not guarantee admission. The panel begins at 2pm, so please arrive early in order to get a spot. Space is limited.

At 9PM, we’ll be heading to the Thompson LES (190 Allen St.) for a full out party complete with drink specials, fierce networking and debauchery. Tell the bartender “shatterbox” (as in shatterbox), in order to get $5 beer and $7 wine.

The official event Twitter hashtag is #YMW. Direct any questions to panelists through that hashtag, and if yours is awesome, we’ll be sure to get you to ask it. See here for more info on panelists (Alex Pareene has since joined!), and we will see you there on Saturday!
