Local Went To The Tribeca Film Festival

As I walked down the stairs, past the merchandise, past the concessions, and into the foyer of Theater 1, I soaked it in. I was working at the Tribeca Film Festival. No, I hadn’t seen Robert De Niro (though, I did run into my old buddy James Franco), but I felt like I was on top of the world.

I was on my way to say hello to my friend Soham when all of a sudden, I saw her. She was beautiful. Everything they all said she would be. Her eyes full of magic. Her huge eyes. Her mouth gently dangling open. Beautiful.”Oh yeah, Lil Bub is here,” my friend Soham began to say, as I was already darting over to meet the famous internet cat. No she’s not Grumpy Cat, or even Colonel Meow, but she was exactly what I hoped she would be. Read more…

NYC Comedy For the Under-21 Crowd

Louie may be the ultimate New York show, and also the kind of thing you want to be watching on Netflix Instant right now, but neither of those facts change that, if you aren’t 21, you probably can’t see him perform stand-up — unless you were lucky enough to snag a ticket for one of his fourteen sold-out shows this month at New York City Center.

The Comedy Cellar on MacDougal St — famous from the show’s opening, and also a frequent haunt for Louis CK IRL — is a place you can never go to unless you are lucky enough to be over 21. Life is rough, but you don’t have to be bitter until your 21st birthday (or until you find a good fake). Take a look right here at some of the places in New York that let you laugh no matter what age you are.

Dance To The Time Warp Of NYC’s Decade Clubs

We’re always look to the past for something. Whether it be a tarnished history or reverence of the ‘Golden Age,’ we get off to knowing there are those who rocked hard before us. To cure any case of hyper-nostalgia, a good reckoning must be had on era nightlife worth your time in New York City. The following is a list of decade bars/clubs that might help you survive this one. Because if there’s anything NYU Local loves, it’s a good ole’ time warp.

1920s: Bathtub Gin

We no longer live in the age of Prohibition, but let’s party under the sinful illusion we do. In Chelsea, Bathtub Gin masquerades as a 1920s speakeasy with conviction. Hidden behind a coffee storefront, the lounge bar is created for you to booze and peruse. There are beautiful people and bourgeoisie drinks all under the helm of what parties wished they were like before the 21st Amendment. Think chandelier print walls, Burlesque-style attire and one huge, bronze bathtub in the middle of the floor. Read more…

While You’re Gone: NYU During The Summer

However nice it is to leave the city and get away for the weekend, winter break, or the summer, there’s often that ever-present fear that you are missing everything all the time. Though NYU does have summer events, these are mostly for high school students. The park, thankfully, will be here for you when you get back.

1. What There Won’t Be: CAS has cut its summer orientation program, so your orientation leaders will work just as cheerfully at the beginning of the year instead. Apparently, there were cost issues, but we can think of some unwise ways NYU is currently spending its money.

NYC Tip: Where To Get The Best Bike For Your Buck

It’s time to conquer fears. Forget about the day that you saw a messenger slam into a taxi, or the scraped knees you got when you flipped over the handlebars at age 5, or the obscenities that came out of your friend’s mouth when he was clipped. It’s time to buy a bike.

Biking is fun, efficient, environmentally friendly, and will get you streamlined for spring break, too. We’ve visited the best bike shops near campus (Brooklyn edition to come) and chosen a few of our favorites.  Read more…

Wind Turbines Proposed To Top NYC Buildings

Everyone loves a windmill. They’re clean, popular in Europe, and can be mistaken for a monsters if you are an old man with medieval fantasies. And they may be coming to New York City.

The Department of City Planning introduced the idea to put 55-foot wind turbines on the top of skyscrapers. In order to do that, a citywide Zone Green amendment, the current zoning laws that allowed for energy-efficient additions to current NYC buildings, would have to be amended. According to The Villager, this amendment is necessary for the rooftop turbine work to commence, as current zoning law, for which turbines were never considered, would restrict them to only the height allowed in their district.   Read more…

New York City And The Bystander Effect

The Bystander Effect is an anthropologic phenomenon that occurs to a crowd of people. If an individual needs help in an emergency, there is a lower possibility of being helped by someone else if there are more people around. As the number of bystanders increase, they will all assume someone else will do something about it. The more people there are around, the less likely it is that anyone will act.

Last week, I’m walking uptown through Astor Place with this girl I’m seeing. We see two men struggling, as one man is holding another man back from running into traffic. Anyone could tell that the man trying to run into traffic was incredibly intoxicated, and he was easily fighting off the first man. We stop, staring at the bizarre scene, trying to figure out what exactly is going down. Emily, the girl I’m with, suggested that we go help the man out. Although I chalk it up to general insanity and figure we should keep walking, we end up going over anyway. Pretty girls have convinced me to do many things.
