Last night’s Mystery Show included acts Built to Spill and Zola Jesus in the intimate Le Poisson Rouge. Although the venue was not packed, the NYU students who attended surged the space with energy, creating an atmosphere that felt ten times more electric.

This year’s Mystery Show acts – Zola Jesus and Built to Spill – were not as buzzy as the festival-friendly Flying Lotus or Gang Gang Dance (who released an LP, Eye Contact, a few months before the 2011 Program Board event), but the whole affair was a gathering of cult followers.  Read more…


Fighting Violets Become Flying Lotuses – MYSTERY SHOW LINEUP REVEALED

NYU’s Program Board deserves a hat tip, or maybe a hug. Year after year, it has consistently booked some of the most interesting artists to perform at their Mystery Concert during the first week of school. This fall’s show on September 8th at Le Poisson Rouge is no exception. The Program Board Concert Chair has given Local a heads up, and the artists performing will be Flying Lotus, Gang Gang Dance and Light Asylum!

Okay, so the promotional poster for the show isn’t exactly subtle, but now you can officially quake in excitement. Sure, FlyLo is not as well known as last year’s headliner Big Boi, but students will not be disappointed. With an acclaimed album and EP released in 2010 (titled Cosmogramma and Pattern + Grid World, respectively), a slew of remixes, plus an awesome set at Coachella, the producer/artist will make your nervous system vibrate with pleasure.

Flying Lotus, ne Steven Ellison, started his career making beats for Cartoon Network but soon began to release his own instrumental music that sounds like a parallel-universe’s J. Dilla. His albums have even garnered their own genre of music, dubbed “trip-hop” due to the avant-garde beats that seem to induce hallucinations in listeners. Ellison is a producer’s producer, and has performed everywhere from Electric Zoo to All Points West Festival, as well as worked with artists like Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. Read more…
