The Best Of NYU Local: Fall 2012

It’s a Friday afternoon on December 21st, and at this point, if your semester isn’t over yet, we feel very, very, very bad for you. But if it is, (we really hope it is) then congrats! Enjoy your time of freedom and Christmas-related celebration (see ya at the movies, NY Jew Local!).

From all of us at NYU Local, we want to thank you, our readers. We would be lost without you (even the trolls). In all seriousness, we so appreciate you. Without you, we wouldn’t exist at all, and would have even less purpose in life than we have now. Thank you, to longtime readers and those of you that stumbled on here while looking for articles on obtaining a Fake ID. Thanks for making this a great semester.

At this point, maybe you’re home. Maybe you’re bored. Maybe you’re off enjoying Winter Wonderland-type things and not playing around on the Internet. Or maybe you’re a sad, frantic person madly procrastinating before your last exam. Whatever you happen to be doing, here are some links from the past few months that you can occupy yourself with. Get distracted.

The Best Of NYU Local: Spring 2012

Well, Spring 2012 is over. Now that the snow has melted Now that summer is here, we can finally drag our pale hollowed carcasses out of Bobst and remember what the sun feels like. We’ll be tanning in the park all next week—come say hi.

Again, we need to thank you for reading. If it wasn’t for the tips, links, photoshops, tweets, and comments, we’d be so lost. We at NYU Local appreciate everything you do, always and forever. Stay safe over summer—we’ll be back.

But hey, in the meantime: whether you’re coming back in the fall, transferring, or—eep—graduating, you might get a little bored. (“Call Me Maybe” won’t last you until September.) So to keep you occupied over summer, here are a few links to our favorite stories from this past semester. Starting with… Read more…

The Best Of NYU Local: Fall 2011

Well, we are done with the semester, and it feels good! We’re sure it does for the rest of you too, as you go home for a month. (Good luck remembering how to drive.)

From everyone at NYU Local, we want to thank you for reading. You are what makes the site what it is, and we would be hopelessly lost and depressed without your constant stream of feedback, comments, tips, links to funny videos that your friends made, and dialogue. It’s been a great semester—here’s to another one.

We’re going to miss you, so we got you a little end-of-semester present. In case you’re bored in your next month at home, driving and hanging out with old friends (“Why did you tattoo ‘FREE EARL’ on your chest?” “You just wouldn’t understand!”), here are a few links to keep the break from dragging. Starting with the biggest story of the year: Read more…

Enjoy The Long Weekend By Reading NYU Local

We’ve been pretty busy around the “office” (i.e. internet) this month.

Because we want to make sure you read every single thing we write, we offer you this list of posts you may have missed:

- NYU fellow Nir Rosen said some ill-advised stuff on Twitter about the sexual assault of a journalist he dislikes. He resigned from NYU after he was condemned in national headlines. We interviewed him about it.

- We hosted a student debt demonstration on Wednesday. Coverage: NYU Local, WSN, Huffington Post, MSNBC, Gothamist.

- NYU is still battling with graduate students who want to unionize. Indeed, university spox John Beckman battles in the comments with just such a student.

- Have you heard much about asexuality?

- The timekeeper has a thing for “oriental girls.” And, yes, we have video to prove it.

- We think you should cancel your price-gouging meal plan.

- Our editor-in-chief sat down with President John Sexton for a wide-ranging interview.

- We try to explain one of NYU’s great mysteries: the Liberal Studies Program.

- Check out these hilarious NYU memes.

- Music coverage: the Fucking Valentine’s Day show, OFWGKTA, and a preview of what’s to come.

- Ex-Gov. David Paterson will be teaching at NYU.

- Finally, we have awesome professors. Some just created the largest ever image of the sky.

The Best Of NYU Local: Fall 2010

As our final semester of the decade comes to a close, we wanted to take a look back and highlight some of our most defining posts. Although there were no huge stories on campus (Columbia got those this semester), there was a lot to talk about. We’ll leave this post at the top of the page over break to welcome new readers (hi class of 2015!) and to let you catch up on anything you might have missed.

As we go on hiatus over the holidays, all of us here at NYU Local would like to say a resounding ‘thank you’ to each of our readers. You all make the site what it is with your comments, your tips, and your feedback. We hope we are achieving our goal of making you “feel pretty damn connected to a school with no campus.”

We have lots of exciting plans for 2011, but, first, let’s look back at 2010: Read more…

NYU Local Is Hiring

It’s that time of year again. Although we accept applications year-round, we are now actively looking for new talent for Spring semester.

If you are interested in journalism, writing, copy editing, taking pictures, or shooting videos, we want you! You can apply here. If you want to know why you should work for the best publication on campus, start by reading this.

You should also know that we have some big changes in store for next year. We will be adding a new features section that will focus exclusively on longer-form, in-depth journalism with opportunities for investigative reporting and major feature posts. We want strong writers and/or reporters to apply — you will work closely with our features editors and the top staff to produce the very best work on campus.

Our multimedia staff is also looking to expand and do more video journalism. If that’s your thing, let us know.

So join the NYU Local community. You’ll get to work with the most influential people on campus, make friends quickly, and be involved in the most fun circle jerk around. We’re serious about covering this campus. We’re also serious about having a blast while we do it. It only takes ten minutes to apply.

If you have submitted an application in the last few weeks, don’t worry — we received it. We’ll be in touch after the finals craziness dies down.

Welcome To The Redesigned NYU Local

After months of discussion, tweaks, and tinkering, we are excited to roll out our new layout for NYU Local.

The redesign, inspired by a shift in tone at the site this year, seeks to make the site cleaner, easier to navigate, and more professional. You’ll immediately notice some of the bigger changes — a new color scheme, bolder fonts, and an all-new featured section. Yet we have also kept the blog format and most of the features of the old design, including the “Top 5″ section and the Photo of the Day.

Many of the more subtle changes seek to streamline and improve the reading experience. Read more…

Let’s Crowdsource My Editing Duties Tomorrow

I want you!...to kind of do my job for me.

Hey all you people who bitch in the comments: guess what? You can tell me what to do tomorrow!

Since tomorrow will be the last day of “normal” Local (before the site devolves into YouTube videos and other finals distractions, aka Friday every day), I figured it might be fun to try something a little different. Is there a story you read that you want covered on Local? Did you see a commercial for a helpful new product you’d like to see covered on here, or an offensive post on some conservative blog that you want criticized? Does your dumb band have a music video for your “really deep acoustic ballad” that’s pretty much “Hey There Delilah” but in the key of E major? Well then tell me about it, ya clumsy oaf!
