Get Pumped For The Planet: Earth Week 2012 In NYC

Earth Day is coming up! Well, really, Earth Week is coming up. Actually…it’s more like Earth Month.

Even though everyone’s favorite holiday is on April 22nd this year, Earth Day events will be going on all month long. We all know what that means—tree plantings, beekeeping workshops, organic hemp-growing demonstrations (we hope) and lots of free food. Here’s a roundup of the best Earth Day events at NYU and beyond.

Mobile-to-Mobile Street Fair Thursday, April 19th 12:30-5:30 pm on Washington Place

The annual street fair is themed “Mobile Ecological Innovators” this year, and will feature artists with moving exhibitions, like a traveling science lab and a truck retrofitted with a farm. Free food will provided by the brand-new NYU student food co-op, one of  this year’s Green Grant recipients that plans to offer organic and local food right on campus.  Read more…

New President, Same Old Chicken And Rice Club

This year, NYU’s Chicken & Rice club has a new face. CAS Sophomore Honda Wang replaced the club’s founder Mustfa Manzur as president of the organization at the beginning of the school year. In case you’re not familiar with the Chicken & Rice club, they try to bring people from all different cultures together to share a meal that exists all around the world: chicken and rice.

With food often catered from New York’s most famous Halal cart, the Chicken & Rice club is a great place to make some new friends and score some free food. Over the weekend, we spoke with Wang about his plans for the club, the mysterious and delicious “white sauce”, and where the best chicken and rice in New York is.

What can we expect from the Chicken and Rice Club this year?

Chicken & Rice is looking to make big moves this year. We’re planning on getting a Thanksgiving dinner together for students still around during the holiday, giving back a feeling of community in a barer NYU campus. This December will also potentially feature some finals relief from C&R, so stay tuned for that event. Additionally, we’ll be co-sponsoring some events with other organizations, catering the classic from the 53rd and 6th halal cart.

New Acting Dean Introduces CAS Open Hour

Gabrielle Starr is filling a gap this year on campus.

When former CAS Dean Matthew Santirocco jetted off to NYU Shanghai, Starr stepped in as Acting Dean. Though the position is temporary, she’s begun to make permanent changes in the College. One of these is resurrecting the CAS Dean’s Open Hour, the last of which was held in November 2007. Starr hosted the first of these sessions last week.

Per the college-wide e-mail Starr sent before the September 23 event, the event was created to let students ask “questions, concerns, or anything that may be on [their] mind.” Students gathered in a non-administrative-type room on Silver’s very-administrative-type ninth floor. A cozy alternative to the deluge outside, it offered couches and refreshments to those who did stop by. Read more…

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year to all the goyim out there, is fast approaching, and you don’t want to be the only mensch without proper plans.

Whether you celebrate it or not, chances are at least one of your classes will be canceled this Thursday. Luckily, this leaves a lot of time for merry-making, feasting, and general apple-and-honey-eating shenanigans. Whether you are here at NYU or on your way back home, rest assured that you will have a blast, and no, it won’t just be the loud sound of a Shofar in your ears. Here are some tips to ring in the New Year like its 5772!

Free Food at Starbucks and Ben & Jerry’s Today

This morning I stumbled into my local East Village Starbucks aching for a caffeine injection. Luckily, I had completely forgotten that today is Free Pastry Day at participating Starbucks locations. Any pastry of your choosing is free with your purchase of a drink. But beware–this event threatens to make the lines at the Starbucks on the Square even more unbearably long. Luckily, it’s also Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s from noon to 8pm. I am not lying– today means free pastries AND ice cream. The closest Ben and Jerry’s is located at 41 Third Avenue between 9th and 10th street. Good luck, brave free food seekers! (Image via)

Free Hot Chocolate, DVD With Artist David Horvitz

Picture 1Show up under the arch in Washington Square Park this Wednesday between 5 and 8pm and you’ll walk away with free hot chocolate and a DVD compilation of “critical art texts” that have influenced Towelhead aka nothing is private download.com/index4.html”>artist David Horvitz‘s work. Though the event, called “Meeting Point” and hosted by Horvitz and NYU Program Board, sounds pretty random, we never say no to free hot chocolate and things we can fiddle around with on the computer. Plus, we have little to no idea who David Horvitz actually is, and it always feels cool to be able to talk about an obscure artist. So yeah, there’s that, too.

Strawberry Fields Forever and Justin Spees’ Day 5 Free Food Diary

Strawberry ShortcakeAnd what better way to close out the most exhilarating week of my NYU Local experience than with a crowded party centering around strawberries. So many things there are that strawberries can mean! And I indulge in all of them in one quick moment before lunch in what is, I believe, the last school day of my life.

1:30 p Vacancy 2 download.m.—I stand in line next to the longest shortcake in New York, which is in fact about as long as the line for it. I consider certain things, like what is keeping me from taking my piece and running, and what will happen if there isn’t a staff keeping the peace. Somehow this is my first Strawberry Fest, and I’d love to stick around but its crowded and I drop my fork on the ground and Obama has warned me about public places.

2:30 p.m.—I meet my friend Ramil at Hayden. He has a meal plan, but we’ve agreed using it counts as a school subsidy because he’s an RA and his meals are provided for. The meal reminds me of how good the dining hall is. I think, of all the things I will miss about NYU, I might miss its sandwiches the most. Read more…

The Universal Barter System and Justin Spees’ Day 4 Free Food Diary

So Angelica Marshall, Chris Phillips, and Superman Charlie Eisenhood, thank you, your kindness is not lost on me. I wonder if I could do this with housing as well.

12:30 p.m.—The Senior Student Council hosts a meeting in Kimmel that mysteriously doesn’t occur. I circle the floor several times before leaving in anguish. Outside I meet roommate/co-worker Mike Vilensky, and we head to a Gallatin party, which tangentially, is the only event this week I have a valid excuse for attending. Arriving at the party we find all the food gone, and in despair race to the Tisch Common Room, where Subway is being served and Finding Nemo is on TV. Later I go back to the Gallatin party where they’ve since ordered pizza. Pizza is not an individualized major. I am also reminded how absurd our school is compared to the others after I tell Mike they don’t designate Men’s and Women’s rooms and he laughs about it. Read more…
