Tattoos At NYU: Young, Wild And Free

It’s October, and the initial excitement of school starting has worn off and everything is starting to look like fall. My mom just sent my winter coats and a three-pack of Halloween-themed Pop Rocks. Everyone is antsy and overworked and looking for something to do or a way to avoid studying. And a lot of people are talking about getting a new tattoo.

The more I talk about future tattoo ambitions, the more I hear people talking about their own. It’s a thing. The tattoo conversation comes up at parties, during five minute class breaks, and, if you get one, tattoos will soon be the agonizing topic of your family’s Thanksgiving dinner.

Pinterest IRL: A Wedding Fair For The Brooklyn Couple

Standing outside of The Bell House on 7th Street in Gowanus, Brooklyn last Sunday, a man dressed in a bowtie and tweed suit raised a long, sharp machete in the air and brought it down with a loud crack into the shell of a coconut. He grinned and glanced up at the crowd gathered around him, letting out a giggle as he ripped off the coconut’s top and poured fruit juice inside of it.

“I have a little bit of an affinity with the coconut, as you can see,” he said.

This man, who identified himself as ‘Coconut Rob,’ was just one of dozens of vendors who flocked to Brooklyn this weekend for a unique event. Wedding Crashers, put on by the events organization Brooklyn Based, is a yearly trade show for vendors seeking to woo couples who want a wedding experience with a DIY esthetic.  Read more…

D.I.Y. Of The Week: Packing for Winter Break

If you’re part of the lucky few that get to head home when classes commence this week, you’re faced with a hectic few days ahead. Even if you’re here until the very end, you still have to find time to do this sometimes tedious task between studying for finals. May we present you with the NYU Local packing tips, hints, and tricks.

Don’t save packing for the last minute. Your last night of the semester should be spent at Brad’s celebrating the fact that you made it through finals, not stuff random crap in your duffle bag. Lists are your best friend this week. Especially this one. While procrastinating for your finals, make a packaging list. Read more…

D.I.Y. Of The Week: Sophisticated Hot Chocolate

December, the month of cold temperatures, gifts, and every possible excuse to eat, drink, and party, is upon us. Your Facebook events are likely filling up quickly and you’re probably planning your own super mature holiday party complete with a holiday swap. The perfect thing to serve: hot chocolate.

No, not just regular hot chocolate, hot chocolate combined with alcohol – no measuring of ingredients required. And not that we’re encouraging drinking in public, but hot chocolate goes in mugs, and mugs conceal beverages so you could potentially browse the Union Square Holiday Market with this in hand. D.I.Y. Of The Week: Go Nuts Over Thanksgiving Pecan Pie

Thanksgiving break – if you can call having Thursday off a break when most of us already have Friday off – is right around the corner. One of my favorite things to do while at college has been to get together with friends the Tuesday before Thanksgiving for a college style Thanksgiving which means alcohol and sweets. One of the easiest pies to make is pecan, so easy in fact, that it was the first thing I learned to cook in home ec class when I was 12. While searching for my pecan pie recipe I discovered that Hill Country Chicken’s amazing pies can actually be made at home as they shared the recipes with the CBS, below you’ll find their “Double-Nut Pecan Pie,” in-store known as “Maker’s Mark Bourbon Pecan Pie.” I have my own hacks for pie making to make the process easier, plus our Editor-in-Chief Keyana is a sort of a pie expert and will likely comment on this post with her own tips so you should probably check that out below.

D.I.Y. Dorm Room Decor Improvements

Last month we taught you how to spruce up your walls with some crafty clothespins to hang photos, and alerted you to Dakota Fanning’s “dorm room.” This month we take your bulletin board from drab to fab without spending $99 at PBTeen (pictured to the right).

The concept is great, but it’s expensive considering bulletin boards cost around $20. Plus the pattern could use some help, we’re not trying to go all Vera Bradley prepster over here. Read more…

D.I.Y. Of The Week: Pizza Bagels

While pizzerias are open practically 24/7 in New York City, sometimes you just crave Bagel Bites. But there’s no reason to go buy the frozen ones from the grocery store when we also live in a city with the only good bagels in the world. Homemade pizza bagels take 25 minutes tops and are more filling than Bagel Bites (come on, we all know a full box of those is actually one serving).

These make the perfect snack or meal for that awkward hour and a half break you have between class because you got closed out of the class you really wanted. They’re also a good emergency dinner for when you just don’t have time to think about what you’re eating because analyzing a media crit essay is more important. They are the perfect midnight snacks for drunchies.

D.I.Y. Of The Week: Worms in Dirt

Growing up in suburbia meant a few things in terms of Halloween: running around trick or treating, silly string and shaving cream fights, and sitting at friends homes to sort candy, snack and watch scary movies. It’s hard to replicate this experience in New York City where you have locked apartment building, a giant parade halting your ability to make it to the subway to friends apartments, and creeps that become even creepier. What better way to relive childhood than with one of my favorite Halloween party desserts – “Worms in Dirt,” a filling snack with a dash of creepy. Read more…

D.I.Y. Of The Week: Halloween Infused Vodka

I’ve been introduced to many new drinks during CMJ this week, from the Bulldog Madras (BULLDOG Gin, Cranberry Juice, Orange Juice, and an orange slice) to Tito’s Handmade Vodka to cocktails at the Bowery Hotel Rooftop Bar. While browsing the Tito’s Handmade Vodka website I came across what they call ”infusions” – soaking something in vodka to give it flavor – a bit similar to sangria or skittles vodka. A little googling and I found many recipes.

Unlike the ever popular skittles vodka, these need to sit for at minimum 3 days, at most 1 week. Below is the recipe I found on Epicurious that I’m going to try this week in honor of Halloween celebrations occurring next weekend. It makes use of the leftover pumpkin guts from carving a pumpkin you otherwise would just throw in the trash. Read more…

D.I.Y. Of The Week: Dorm Room Decor

Now that you’ve settled into your routine for the semester it’s time to spruce up your walls – you can’t claim the bare walls are a metaphor for the lack of meaning in your life forever. October is National Arts and Humanities Month which means you should probably get off your butt and go to a museum (click here for a list of free ones), check out some galleries, or see a concert (CMJ is right around the corner) and get a little inspired. So now that you’ve found great pieces of art, photos you love (or is it like?), and ticket stubs it’s time to decorate and make your room a little more you.

You could use thumbtacks to hang your inspiration, photos, concert tickets, and other acquired object in the last month or you could take a more interesting approach which I found in the dorm room of Lafayette resident Kristi (Gallatin ’13). Kristi hung up her photos with clothespins, and not just any plain wooden clothespin but a sparkly clothespin. Read more…
