Mike Birbiglia and Mates of State Sing a Song About Oatmeal
Last night Mike Birbiglia had a show over at Town Hall, and unlike normal stand-up comics who would invite a decidedly less talented comic to go on as the opener, he had the Mates of State. If none of you are familiar with them, just think of the indie pop-duo you vaguely remember from high-school and you’ll be all set. Anyway, if the viewer was unfamiliar with Birbigs, as they call him on da streetz (and by “da streetz” I mean twitter), they might have thought it was weird when an awkward looking “olive-garden Italian” guy came onstage.
In fact, there are probably a few things people need to be prepared for if they’re going to see this guy. The first is that you have to understand that even though he’s a guy who’s pretty hip with all us awkward humor-lovin’, This American Life watchin’, whitewashed hipsters, if you go see him perform, you’re going to be sitting next to people who resemble your grandparents. That’s just the way it is. But if you’re the type of person who would find that juxtaposition comically awkward, then Mike Birbiglia is probably one of your favorite stand-up comics. You know how some comics will include some kind of universally pleasing anecdote about their life just so people will clap about it and he can go into a vein of relevant comedy, like “So anyway, I just got married…” or “So anyway, I’m a cancer survivor…”? Well Mike Birbiglia is the kind of guy who would instead say, “So anyway, I ironed my pants tonight…” and it elicits pretty much the same response.

Comedian Aziz Ansari Coming to Skirball
You may know comedian Aziz Ansari from his role as Tom Haverford on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, or his cameo as “Raaaaaaaandy” in Judd Apatow’s Funny People. Always managing to stay just this side of annoying, his immaturity and vulgarity rarely fail to amuse. Ansari is an NYU alum, and he’s coming home to Skirball on October 29th at 8pm. Tickets are $25 for non-NYU students, but discount tickets can be purchased through NYU Home for students. Ansari will be performing with John Mulaney, a fellow comedian best known for his appearances on VH1’s Best Week Ever. Be sure to snag your tickets before they sell out.
Thanks to @NYUscpa for the heads up.

NYU’s Dangerbox Improv Comedy Group is Impressively Comedic
This past Friday night I was planning on relaxing, buying some Blue Moon and catching up on my DVR as I planned the rest of my Friday night. These exciting plans were foiled when I was convinced by my friend to go check out Dangerbox Improv, an NYU sketch comedy troupe, scheduled to perform at Kimmel. I was not thrilled about the idea of trekking to Kimmel on a Friday night but I thought, what the hell, let them prove me wrong. Lucky for me, they totally did.

Nick Ross’ Cool Your J is, Indeed, Cool
I’m the type of person who, when going to a comedy club, tries to wedge myself into the least conspicuous corner of the room possible so as to avoid being noticed and made fun of by the comedian. And thus, I did just that when I went to the Upright Citizens Brigade this Wednesday to see Nick Ross’ Cool Your J.
But I didn’t know that it wasn’t that kind of show, so when Ross came out in his first character—a screechingly obnoxious faux-gangsta in a tracksuit wanting to party on though club is closing—I was thoroughly annoyed. But it suddenly became much less annoying when I realized that he was supposed to be annoying. From then on, Cool Your J became quite enjoyable. Continue…
