Campus Starbucks’ Live Jazz Raises Ire
Here’s an email from a student who likes to study at the 4th street Starbucks:
“Am I the only one who finds it incredibly distracting and inconsiderate to host that insanely loud, live jazz band in Starbucks at Washington Square all the time? I’m all for culture and entertainment, but… it becomes virtually impossible to work, and takes away one of our vital comfy-studying-areas every time they play. It’s so frustrating.”
I rarely go into this Starbucks, but I’ve personally only ever heard jazz on Thursday nights. I think that’s a pretty reasonable time to have music – and it’s great for young musicians to have a place to perform in a popular public setting. But is there more music now? And do you think it’s pleasant or annoying?

Joe the Art of Coffee
As 40-degree days start to become 20-degree days, coffee starts to serve a second purpose. Not only does coffee keep us college students awake, but cafés also become places to drink something warm and sit somewhere warm.
The obvious crucial element to a café is its coffee. I bought a cappuccino at Joe the Art of Coffee for the first time in a while; I had forgotten how delicious their coffee is. Joe started to gain its credibility a little over year ago when magazines and newspapers began to praise it as the best. Many places to get good coffee nearby (Gimme! Coffee, Oren’s, etc.) don’t offer a place to get out of the winter weather. Joe, on the other hand, has two small locations near NYU buildings (13th Street between 5th and University; and Waverly just west of 6th Ave) with cramped, but warm, indoor seating. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t see a lot of NYU students with Joe Coffee; yet every time I stop by for a cup, the café is always packed.

Despite Extraneous Exclamation Point, Gimme! Coffee is Worth It
I’m not sure that Food and Wine Magazine is the gold standard for Coffee reviews, but I’d imagine their columnists still have pretty picky taste buds. In their latest issue, a columnist said Gimme! Coffee, brews one of the top ten cups in the US. Gimme! Coffee just recently opened their first shop in Manhattan this year after 5 successful years on Lorimer in Brooklyn. Their cafe on Mott surely fits their proclaimed “worn” style, but it lacks street-level seating. Since getting my first cup of Gimme! last week, I’ve decided that my coffeemaker needs a rest and that spending the $1.75 is well worth it. Try the Ethiopian (medium roast) if it happens to be one of the two daily roasts.
