Free Food, Buffy, And Other Perks Of NYU’s Lesser-Known Clubs

Spring is here! It’s time once again to emerge from hibernation and do Social Things. Burst from your cave—er, dorm—with enthusiasm by making new friends at one of NYU’s more unusual clubs.

Joss Whedon Appreciation Society

Does Firefly’s cancellation still provoke strong emotions from you? Was your Spring Break devoted to a secret Buffy-watching binge? You’ll feel right at home in the Joss Whedon Appreciation Society, a club dedicated to the projects of writer/director Joss Whedon. Originally founded as a Facebook group of “twenty or so” Whedon fans, the society has since branched out, obtaining official club status from NYU and a Facebook following of 170 members. Club members (appreciators?) are invited to frequent screenings of Whedon’s films and TV shows; much better than watching Buffy alone on Netflix. Read more…

Sandy Relief Efforts On Campus

As class gets back to normal, and with pushed-back deadlines fast approaching, it can be hard to remember that not everyone is finished with Hurricane Sandy. As snow falls and temperatures, now more than ever victims need our help. NYU Local will update this list as more clubs and relief efforts are released, so stay tuned for more ways to volunteer on-campus! And send us tips over the weekend so that we can add to the list. Now go help out!

“Stuff the Trolley” began in participating residence halls yesterday. NYU is looking for winter clothes, blankets, food, and other supplies to fill the trolley of FNYU fame and deliver goods to those in need. You can drop things off in rez hall bins or go to Kimmel this Friday from 10-2 to include your contribution.

Dance To The Time Warp Of NYC’s Decade Clubs

We’re always look to the past for something. Whether it be a tarnished history or reverence of the ‘Golden Age,’ we get off to knowing there are those who rocked hard before us. To cure any case of hyper-nostalgia, a good reckoning must be had on era nightlife worth your time in New York City. The following is a list of decade bars/clubs that might help you survive this one. Because if there’s anything NYU Local loves, it’s a good ole’ time warp.

1920s: Bathtub Gin

We no longer live in the age of Prohibition, but let’s party under the sinful illusion we do. In Chelsea, Bathtub Gin masquerades as a 1920s speakeasy with conviction. Hidden behind a coffee storefront, the lounge bar is created for you to booze and peruse. There are beautiful people and bourgeoisie drinks all under the helm of what parties wished they were like before the 21st Amendment. Think chandelier print walls, Burlesque-style attire and one huge, bronze bathtub in the middle of the floor. Read more…

Among Apathy, Making Time For God

Michael Hwang wants to know if you have a few minutes to talk about Jesus. A member of Korean Campus Crusaders for Christ, NYU’s largest evangelical Christian group, Michael meanders through Washington Square Park twice a week, speaking with strangers about the path to God. Or, at least, he speaks with those who will listen.

“Sometimes you walk around and just get ‘no’ after ‘no’ for an hour or more,” said Hwang, a senior studying sociology in CAS. In addition to Washington Square, Hwang evangelizes in parks around the city. “Union Square is one of the hardest places to talk to people,” he explained, continuing, “I actually had a guy laugh and tell me he was a devout apathetic.”

Devout apathy — or, at least, casual disregard — seems to be the norm for NYU students when it comes to religion. For many, the closest we get to religious practice is regularly attending brunch on Sunday mornings.  Read more…

The Feminist Society At NYU Holds First Meeting On Valentine’s Day, Welcomes All

The newest organization on campus, The Feminist Society at NYU, has us asking, “why hasn’t this always existed?” Nadia Hassan, one of the group’s four founding presidents, said it was this question that prompted her, Catie Brown, Sarah Khan, and Margaret Smiley to create the club.

“I realized that a feminist organization that was welcoming to both men and women was something that was missing at NYU. There are other groups on campus that are similar, but not quite.” While speaking with women in her own life, Hassan found that they were often put-off by the stereotypical, and incorrect, idea of feminism as something championed by “bra-burning and man-hating women” unlucky in love. “We wanted to redefine feminism as something that all people could relate to,” she explained.

The Winners And Losers Of The Spring Budget Cuts For NYU Clubs

Last month, we told you that the All-Square Student Budget Allocation Committee (ASSBAC) announced its decision to reduce the 2011-2012 budget allocation for All-Square Clubs of NYU by 8.5% across the board due to “an accounting error.” Well NYU Local just got our hands on most of the All-Square Club budgets for the spring semester.

Part of their original error was due to a “computer glitch,” and it seems that ASSBAC hasn’t improved their computer skills since October — they accidentally emailed all of the club budgets out to everyone on the ASSBAC listserv.

Even though they’ve slashed the budgets, there seems to be more winners than losers here. We’ve bolded the ones that we think you should pay extra special attention to. Want to complain or taunt other clubs? Sound off in the comment section. [Note: NYU Local is not funded by NYU] Read more…

All-Square Clubs Of NYU Face Huge Budget Cuts

On October 19th the All-Square Student Budget Allocation Committee (ASSBAC) announced its decision to reduce the 2011-2012 budget allocation for All-Square Clubs of NYU by 8.5% across the board due to “an accounting error.” In a mass email, the Committee explained that the budget they “received from the University for this academic year was less than what had been expected last year when funds were allocated.”

In the same email, ASSBAC also apologized to the clubs that had not received their budgets until October this year, even though they had submitted their budget applications on time in March last academic year. They attributed this mishap to “a computer glitch” that had prevented them from receiving a large number of the applications.

NYU Slam Poetry Team Wows At First Slam

At their first ever slam on October 21st, the NYU Slam Poetry Team called fifteen NYU student poets to the stage to spit emotional, fiery, hilarious, poignant and altogether powerful spoken word poems in hopes of being named a member. The slam opened with featured performer Mahogany L. Brown, a respected and decorated slam poet and curator of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, who read her own spoken word poems along with excerpts from her new tweet-based book, #Dear Twitter (a sample: “Dear Justin Bieber: ask the Backstreet Boys and N*SYNC how this movie ends”). Student poets took the mic under low lighting next and were judged by select audience members on a scale of 1-10. Read more…

Attention Student Leaders: Three Ways To Hold On To Club Fest Goers

Club Fest is taking place in Coles from 2pm to 7pm today, and it is one of the few times student activists all come together to promote their club and show the freshman what they can get involved with. Too often, students write down their emails on a paper spreadsheet, and either you can’t read their handwriting or you have to spend hours inputting addresses into the computer. Here are a three ways to better keep connected to people you meet at club fest. Read more…
