Member of the Astor Family Found Guilty of Scamming Own Mother

The New York Times is reporting that Anthony D. Marshall, the son of the late “legendary New York society matriarch” (in the Times’s words) Brooke Astor (pictured), was found guilty of defrauding his Alzehimer’s-suffering mother.
Mr. Marshall was found guilty of 14 of the 16 counts against him, including one of two first-degree grand larceny charges, the most serious he faced. Jurors convicted him of giving himself an unauthorized raise of about $1 million for managing his mother’s finances. Prosecutors contended that Mrs. Astor’s Alzheimer’s had advanced so far that there was no way she could have consented to this raise and other financial decisions that benefited Mr. Marshall.

Prop 8 Demonstration Descends Upon City Hall
Hundreds of protestors showed up at New York’s City Hall Saturday to stand up to the recent passing of Proposition 8 in California. The demonstration followed Wednesday night’s protest outside the Manhattan Mormon Temple.
Proposition 8, or “Prop 8,” was a proposition that appeared on the California ballot, banning same-sex marriage.
While the constitutional fairness of Proposition 8 is currently being challenged by several lawsuits, gay and lesbian communities across the country are uniting to voice their disapproval, citing the proposition as a violation of human rights.

Gutter Punk Diaspora?
Has anyone else noticed that the homeless (or “homeless,” I can never tell) gutter punks, who at one time hung out solely on St. Marks Place, have not only multiplied in numbers, but spread their domain? Obviously the two events are related – St. Marks Place simply can’t hold them all anymore, and the sidewalks are always crowded as it is. I just came home to see two sitting outside my building on Second Avenue, and the other day I saw some as far away as the Walgreens in Astor Place. Many of them seem to have been able to afford huge camping backpacks at some point, but are now completely covered in dirt. Literally. So, my question is two-fold: Where are they coming from, and has anyone else noticed this gutter punk diaspora?
Or maybe they’re all just freegans?
