Tomorrow

Vote. Because it does matter. I don’t care if you’re in New York, Pennsylvania, or Alabama; the electoral college may be what decides who the winner is, but the popular vote will still shape what happens next.

Seriously, Enough With This “Joe the Plumber” Bullshit

Like many of you who watched the third debate, I was pretty sure that this whole “Joe the Plumber” thing was an annoying digression that would become something of a cultural meme but not have any broader implications for the race, similar to the “You forgot Poland” moment of 2004.

But instead, this has gotten worse than any of us could have imagined.

WSN Columnist Endorses Political Irrelevance

Believe it or not, this whole election thing seems to have a lot of people pretty energized; particularly, it seems, on college campuses. This leaves some of us wondering: Whatever happened to the good old days of voter apathy, when you could stand up and say, “It doesn’t matter because both candidates are the same, man!”? Luckily, those days might not be behind us. Congrats to Washington Square News’s own Maggie Craig, for bravely taking a semi-coherent stand against civic responsibility.

Everyone’s Pointlessly Speculating!

With one day left, we’re now at the point where coverage reaches a critical mass just as actual news is at an all-time minimum. But the news outlets, and both campaigns, are cranking out white noise as much as they possibly can. So what’s a blogger to do? More predictioning!

Palin Pick Turns Out to Be as Disastrous as Everyone Imagined

Remember when Democrats were scared Palin was going to propel McCain to victory? It is easy to forget that McCain took a small lead in national polling after the Palin pick and the St. Paul convention. Since that brief period of glory, though, the McCain camp has probably been kicking itself as Palin’s candidacy fell into farce. As the country has seen more of Palin, they have been less and less impressed. A full 59% of people now think she is not prepared for the vice presidency, up 9% since the beginning of the month.

Pointless Speculation Part Four: NYU Prof Shows Us the Only Real Electoral Map

That there is the graphic of swing states I used in my initial prediction. But it turns out that the map isn’t strictly accurate. Indeed, it’s based on a fallacy. A fallacy, I say! Leave it up to NYU Journalism professor and NYU Local adviser Adam Penenberg to set the record straight.

Pointless Speculation Part Three: Pointless Speculation Goes Meme-y

Apologies in advance for the gratuitously horse-racy coverage today, but honestly, unless the rumored Osama Bin Laden sex tape finally leaks, not a whole lot is going to change between now and Tuesday. And if you’re anything like me (pray that you’re not), you’re probably rifling through polling data like a junkie searching for needles.

Anyway, after since Charlie and I kicked off our friendly wager, Jamelle and Matt, friends of the blog and members of the clubhouse, have put up their own maps. My take on their predictions after the jump.

Closing Statements

Last night, the Obama campaign aired a half hour campaign commercial, an infomercial, really, that I suppose was intended to serve as his closing statement. I haven’t seen it yet, but you can watch it above and make up your own mind about it. I hear it’s about his awesome new exercise machine, that you can get now for only $19.95.

Your Vote Might Actually Count

I remember being shocked last year when Lily Q released a poll that showed a lot of NYU students would sell their right to vote for as little as a free iPod. Yet the idea behind selling your vote isn’t that crazy. Many people don’t think that their single vote has any significance, so why not sell it? Well, Andrew Gelman, professor of statistics at Columbia, calculated the probabilities of a single vote determining the winner of the election and came up with some surprising results. Continue…

NYU Study: Jews <3 Obama

A country-wide survey of more than 3,000 Jews and gentiles found that a higher percentage of the Jewish population than the White population plans to vote for Obama (67 percent of Jews vs. 37 percent of Whites).

When Stephen Cohen and Sam Abrams, associates of NYU’s Berman Jewish Policy Archive, presented their findings at the Puck Building on Monday, my first question was, what’s the point of all this? Why do we care about the breakdown of Jewish voting tendencies? My question was answered when Abrams said, “You social democrats, you have a lot of work to do. This is not a population you have in your pocket.” Continue…
