To the photographers at NYU Local,
I hate to be blunt here, but I, along with my friends who love your site, would really like to see the photography get on the same level as the writing. The shots are generally poorly composed, not edited that well for the web, and its pretty obvious the photographer spends about 15min per day getting the shot.
Did you have to crop this hat guys feathers out? Why is his face so dark?
Do us all a favor and put some effort into the shots! As a visual communications major in Steinhardt, even I can tell when someone doesn’t put effort into a picture. C’mon people! We all know you can do better!

Why is his face so dark? Umm…I believe that is his skin color.

I love Dean’s photos. And based on this post, I think he puts a lot of time and expertise into them: http://nyulocal.com/photo-of-the-day/2008/11/12/photo-of-the-day-31/.
First up, you have absolutely no idea how long photographers spend getting their shots and what they do to get them so let’s keep speculation out of this.
I stopped this guy, had a conversation with him about how he is the self-proclaimed “best-dressed homeless guy” in New York, discussed his outfit, and eventually got the shot in exchange for a donation. As you can see from the comment above, he is a campus character and is therefore relevant, considering this is NYU LOCAL.
As far as his skin color goes, I don’t know what you’re implying. And what feathers are you referring to?
With regard to getting the photography on the same level as the writing, I apologize that there aren’t more shots of Obama. If you don’t mind, I would appreciate it if you could provide a link to an article that resides on this level you mentioned.
With Photo of the Day being what it is, you are bound to disagree with a shot here and there. Basing an opinion on one shot is ridiculous and if you look over past past photos you will realize that not everyone shares the same view as you and “your friends.”
Thanks for stopping by!!
I concur, Dean’s pictures are amazing–
I don’t understand the critiques either. What is meant by “to the level of the writing?”
Kaz Kreutner
As for Deans pics being AMAZING…. wrong! they are SENSATIONAL.
Why on earth would he want to darken a skin thats already dark????? Lighten up sarah – you are one far too critical girl.
Dean Stattmann
I just want to put it out there that Photo of the Day is 100% open to reader submissions. If you have a photo that you feel is good enough to be displayed on the front page, send is to statt88@gmail.com.
yay! i love that guy
