In Defense of New Facebook

Tags:

The almighty facebook administrators forced users to switch to the new layout last week and I’ve seen dozens of new groups pop up on my fancy new feed. Whatever they’re called (”I Hate The New Facebook” , “5,000,000 people who want the option ‘Back to the Old Facebook’ to remain”), they all despise the new design. I really only have three problem with such groups: New Facebook is faster, more streamlined, and more customizable than the previous version.

I’ll admit it, when I first clicked the “Check out the New Facebook” link, I quickly switched back, finding myself turned off by the many tabs and the weird wall. But when I heard the switch would be permanent, I headed back to all the newness. And I liked it. I like that I can look only at status updates or photos. I like that I can post a link quickly from right above my wall. I like that the wall is the main aspect of the profile, and I don’t have to scroll through a bunch of idiotic applications to stalk people. (Everyone does it. Why deny it?) Most of all, I like that I have the ability to customize everything with the little pencil icons. It’s so nice to be able to change around the look of the site without having to go through tedious settings menus.

I seem to remember a similar hatred for the News Feed when it premiered, and it’s now such a mainstay that nobody wants it altered. Really I don’t understand why it is that everyone hates NFB so much. Isn’t the Facebook generation the one that wants change?

But the news feed didn’t change the overall layout of the site; everyone’s profiles, for the most part, looked the same.

I don’t know, I just think New Facebook was too much change, and the fact that they don’t let you change back if you want to is annoying.

Well, okay, I did change back to the old facebook (it’s REALLY not that hard–google, people!) and I’m gonna stick with it. But to each his own!

I didn’t like it initially, but I see that they tweaked and fixed much of it. The “new” facebook is updated over their original preview and a lot of the criticism is now moot. I kinda like it, now if only it didn’t seem to get bogged down by traffic and freeze on posting messages…
