Another small victory
The LGBT community has been celebrating both big and small victories all summer. Yesterday we celebrated another small victory as a New York state judge turned down a lawsuit filed by the Alliance Defense Fund, a Christian non-profit organization, aimed to overturn Governor Paterson’s directive to recognize same-sex marriages from other states in New York. Sigh. The fact that there was a lawsuit to turn down in the first place is ridiculous.
Along with the American Family Association, the Alliance Defense Fund seems to be one of these organizations bent on making life hellish for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans individuals under the guise of touting the morals of the Bible and “speaking the Truth.” In response to GLSEN’s (Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network) annual Day of Silence, the ADF organizes a Day of Truth when students who so choose can “counter the promotion of the homosexual agenda.” The homosexual agenda. You know, wake up, brush teeth, moisturize?
I guess in a way I’m grateful for the ADF’s interesting methods of protest because in order for there to be a logical middle-of-the-road discourse about same-sex marriage there have to be the extremes. Having the extremes always puts the larger issue in perspective. Maybe if the ADF and AFA continue to unsuccessfully shoot down the blossoming “homosexual agenda,” some real progress can be made.
