There is a notoriously absurd class in the Computer Science department at this university called “Intro to Web Design and Computer Principles.” In return for sitting in a crowded auditorium and staring at projections of Photoshop, Flash and Netscape 1.0, students receive a practical overview of web design and the best practices for using the lasso tool to move Kanye West from a stage to a planet made of Cheese Doodles. Yeah, some ground-breaking stuff here.
It’s classes like these that truly give students an edge when applying to jobs and internships (at BuzzFeed) or for those looking to live and die on Reddit. You’d be crazy to buy a cheap book, watch a free YouTube video or subscribe to an online training program when you can pay thousands of dollars to have a professor show you how to put yourself on a cereal box, on the moon or in an animated GIF.

Fun fact: I didn’t do the last assignment for this class. Still got a B. If you’re in Tisch and you need a science class, take this.
This is so fantastic. It reminds me of my intro to graphic design classes in high school. Even when I was 15, I came up with better pieces than this.
Ditto, Seth. This was the best joke I’ve ever had the pleasure of sitting through on a bi-weekly basis. I told the prof I already knew photoshop and InDesign and he told me I could sleep in for a couple weeks. And I got my science credit!! But now my department got wise and doesn’t allow that in the future. But in all seriousness, I actually learned a few things, this class is fun, and it’s great if you’re computer illiterate. Like…completely computer illiterate, which I’m not.
Here’s what I did for this assignment: http://i5.nyu.edu/~gb1067/web_design/assignments.html
Possibly the funnest class I’ve taken. If you can, take it with Josh Clayton. Super cool guy and (as you can see) really awesome assignments.
