What’s Good With Your Hairdo?

Welcome to What’s Good With Your ___, a new series in which we explore the unique traits of various NYU students. Beat reporter Andrew Olshevski and photographer Julia Berke loitered around campus to figure out what really makes NYU ecclectic.

Cole, Gallatin Sophomore – Archaeology

What’s good with your hairdo?

I guess it’s functional. I knew I wanted my hair long; I really just put it in a pony tail so I don’t eat it when I eat. There’s a lot of different factors that help people distinguish my brother and I apart–he has short hair, I have long hair, so that also helps.

How do you care for it?

‘How do I care for it?’ This is like a horse.

Well it is actually a bit of a mane you’ve got there.

I actually did use Mane & Tail, which is horse shampoo, for a little while back in California. No, but I care for it like any normal person would care for their hair. I condition, which is good. I take the fleas out (laughs), me and my brother we just kind of sit behind each other and eat the bugs in each other’s hair.

Jen, Gallatin Graduate Student – Music, Media & Art Psychology

What’s good with your hairdo?

I don’t know, it’s natural, I just threw it up.

When did you know that you were going to have short hair?

Actually, this is long for me. I cut it really short a couple years ago and now I’m trying to grow it out so I’m in this awkward in-between stage.

As a long-time supporter of short hair, why are you deciding to grow it out again?

That could be a complex answer. Being a woman, I think there’s a lot of gender associations tied to long and short hair so maybe it’s strange to say but me becoming more comfortable with my feminine, like, side.

Xilin, Stern Senior – Finance

What’s good with your hairdo?

Nothing, really.

What’s the philosophy behind your hairstyle?

My philosophy is I don’t want my ears to be exposed.

What do you do in terms of shampoo?

I don’t know, I just grab the most colorful shampoo that I see on the shelf.

Do you condition?

I don’t think so…

Tiffany, Tisch Sophomore – Film

What’s good with your hairdo?

It’s always changing! It’s been blonde for a while; I say that I’m having a blonde moment right now, for about a year and a half now, which is kind of strange. It’s been every color–pink, black, three different shades of red, three different shades of orange, long, short.

What is it about blonde that you like so much?

It fits me, I like it, it goes with everything. I don’t know, I get a lot of compliments so I’ve just decided to keep it.

How do you care for it?

Since it’s naturally curly I have to wash it everyday, which is unusual for black people (laughs). And I have to put a lot of oil in it to make sure that it’s moisturized.

Nili, Gallatin Senior – Global Studies

What’s good with your hairdo?

Pretty simple, low-key. I washed it this morning.

What did you wash it with?

This little bottle … Arrojo is the brand. I spent some money on it.

What’s up with the blonde parts?

At the beginning of the summer I got my hair cut, and she dyed it almost all blonde and I was like, I am not into this at all. And she kinda didn’t tell me she was gonna do that. But now I like it, now that it’s grown out.

Alex, CAS Senior – Psychology

What’s good with your hairdo?

It’s not too fresh, I got it about a month ago. Haven’t really maintained it since. That’s what’s good.

Where do you like to go for your haircuts?

Well I’m very frugal when it comes to my haircutting choices so I only go to Astor. Just ‘cause it’s cheapest. It’s like fifteen bucks. And I don’t feel like paying someone like seventy bucks just to like work some clippers and so some weird layering shit with my hair.

Well are you generally pleased with what you get at Astor Place?

Sure. I wouldn’t give like a glowing recommendation but they cut my hair, so that’s what I have to say about that.

What’s With Your ____ will be back soon. We’ll be getting up in your grill about sweaters, jewelry, facial tattoos and more. Stay tuned, friends.
