Day 2: Kelly Meets The Pigeon Man

Every day this week, we’re bringing you diaries from some of NYU’s shiny new freshmen. Click here to meet our diarists, read up on what you’ve missed so far, and check back on NYU Local every day for more insight.

8:30 am - “Let me sing you the song of my people.” –the construction site directly beneath my window.

8:41 am - Having awakened so early, I pronounce today Responsible Adult Day©. I make a list of Responsible Adult Chores.

8:42 am - Sit and admire my list.

9:15 am - Make breakfast and wash dishes like a champion. Watch suitemates wander in. Haven’t seen Suitemate #6 in approximately twenty-four hours. Wondering if I should be worried.

10:05 am - Rather than view this as being five minutes late to class, I will view this as a fifty-five minute improvement over my (lack of) arrival yesterday.

10:17 am - Ice-breaker games with the class. We stand in a circle, name our favorite and increasingly obscure bands, and nod appreciatively at others’ choices. No one’s heard of my favorite band. Did I just win or lose?

1:07 pm - Apparently I live near a Kmart. This is excellent because exercising fiscal responsibility and shopping for low-end cleaning supplies is one of the activities I’ve planned for today’s experiment in adulthood.

Pictured: Financial responsibility. Also, iced tea.

1:29 pm - “TIDE,” strange man outside Kmart, offers commentary on my groceries. I clutch my laundry detergent to my chest like it’s my firstborn.

1:35 pm - Feel like a triumphant hunter-gatherer as I return to the suite with my groceries. Look, my people! I bring the gifts of clean countertops!

1:50 pm - Still no sign of Suitemate #6. Suitemate #2 and I decide to explore Washington Square Park. We spot the fabled Pigeon Man covered in birds. I haven’t lived here long enough to acquire the appropriately blasé attitude toward pigeons so the moment pictured at the top of this post is one of the most exciting moments of my life.

I AM HOLDING A BIRD AND IT LOVES ME (or the food I’m holding in that hand).

7:13 pm - Meet a group of NYU-Poly students. What’s this? People even less familiar with the Village than me? Leading them around and pretending I actually know where we’re going (hint: I don’t).

10:21 pm - Rocky Horror Picture Show! My friends traitorously identify me as a Rocky Horror Virgin and the trademark You-Have-No-Idea-What-You’re-About-to-Watch “V” is drawn on my forehead in red lipstick.

12:05 am - I still have no idea what I just watched. Was this some kind of cult initiation? Am I a pledge now? Is it wrong that I liked it?

12:31 am - I have an 8:15 class so, in keeping with Responsible Adult Day, I’m going home to sleep.

1:03 am - Or I could go out with the Poly kids.

1:21 am - I mean, I’m still pretty aware of my surroundings.

2:04 am - Falling asleep outside a pizza place. Lovely Poly people escorting me home.

2:20 am - Home again. Must write and make words.

2:23 am - Oh look, it’s Suitemate #6.

2:30 am - Sleeping with head on kitchen table.

His given name is not Pigeon Man, it’s actually Paul. Just thought everyone should know, because he’s pretty cool if you don’t just ogle him. Sorry if I shattered the illusion! haha
