Know Your Trustees: Maria Bartiromo

Note: Have you ever wondered who decides where your tuition money goes? In our new series, Know Your Trustees, we will be profiling these individuals who make huge financial decisions for the university. This is the first post in the series.

NYU Trustee Maria Bartiromo is an anchor at CNBC and a managing editor of  “The Wall Street Journal Report with Maria Bartiromo”. Both are nationally syndicated.

Bartiromo, 44, graduated from NYU in 1989 with a degree in journalism and economics.  She grew up in Brooklyn, where her parents owned an Italian restaurant and she attended an all-girls Catholic high school.

According to her website, she first started reporting about business and the stock market for CNN, then later, in 1993, she moved to CNBC, eventually becoming the first journalist to report live on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange in 1995—a place where very few females could be found. And while she went by the nickname “Money Honey” for a good ten years, she quietly dropped the moniker in 2010.

In addition to her trustee position at NYU, she also sits on the board of directors at the New York City Ballet and the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York.

Dealbreaker reported in September of 2010 that she taught a Stern class that fall that was filled up within ten minutes, titled “Global Markets and Normative Frameworks.” She frequently shows up at the University to give talks and moderate panels.

Bartiromo has also been accused, in the past, of having a conflict of interest with a former Citi Group exec. While CNBC remained that there was no conflict, the Wall Street Journal claimed that the exec requested to use the company’s private jet to take Bartiromo to his home in Montana for a ski vacation- a request that was turned down by Citi Group. The Times, however, praised her for taking the scandal in stride and even coming out on top.

The most interesting fact we found while researching Bartiromo was that Joey Ramone developed such a crush on the financial reporter, he recorded a song about her entitled “Maria Bartiromo”. It was released on his album Don’t Worry About Me.

This lady is pretty much who everyone on Wall Street wakes up to. Crazy that she’s a trustee.
