Morgan Geist Was On Beats In Space Last Night

For the first time in three years, Morgan Geist came to WNYU’s studios to pay a visit to Beats In Space. “You’re becoming this great emcee,” Geist tells BIS host Tim Sweeney. “You were so awkward last time.” Tim laughs, leaning away from the microphone.

While Sweeney may have come into his own as an FM DJ since Geist’s last session at WNYU, Geist himself has come a ways in the last three years. He’s started to have fun with music again, he tells Sweeney. (“That should be on Pitchfork, that you’re happy with music,” Tim responds.) Recently, Geist has refocused his efforts efforts with Environ Records, the label he founded in 1995, aiming to “have fun and not worry about selling [music]” as much as possible. Environ Records is home to Geist, his projects like Metro Area and his latest work as Storm Queen. Throughout the course of his set Geist played new material from Storm Queen, a noticeably bassier track than the majority of his Detroit techno-oriented set.

Beats In Space airs on WNYU 89.1 FM Tuesdays from 10:30 pm. to 1 a.m.
