The NYU community hosts a wide variety of talks, performances, guest speakers and events every week. With a sprawling campus and disconnected information outlets, these opportunities are often under-advertised. Here are our picks from this week’s NYU Calendar of Events.
1) Free Yoga: Today at 5pm-6pm, free yoga for NYU students is being led at 1 Washington Place, 4th Floor, Room 430.
2) Poet Charles Simic: On Tuesday, Charles Simic will be speaking at the NYU Bookstore for the SCPS Inside/Outside Reading Series. Simic is a Poet-In-Residence at the NYU Creative Writing Program. He has written over 60 books including the Pulitzer Prize-Winning World Doesn’t End: Prose Poems. The event starts at 6:30 pm.
3) Distinguished String Faculty Recital, Stephanie Chase: Relax before or after your midterms this Wednesday with a free string performance at Frederick Loewe Theater, 35 West 4th Street. 8pm.
4) Magazine Workshop with Adam Moss: The award-winning editor of New York Magazine, Adam Moss, will be discussing story ideas and the creation of new sections on Wednesday from 6pm-8pm. 20 Cooper Square, 7th floor.
5) Panel on Hydrofracking in New York State: Ever wonder what the solicitors who use that silly sounding word, hydrofracking, are going on about? On Thursday at 6:30pm, representatives from Environmental Advocates of New York, Natural Resources Defense Council, Earthjustice and Catskill Mountainkeeper will discuss this controversial technique for extracting natural gas. This event is in collaboration with Environmental Advocates of New York. Located at Vanderbilt Hall 214.
6) An Evening with Somaly Mam: This Friday at 8pm, join Samaly Mam, a Cambodian survivor of sex trafficking, to hear her story and learn about her work in shelters. Learn how you too can help this cause. The event free event for students will be hosted at the Rosenthal Pavilion in Kimmel.
