Breaking: 1 University Place Blocked Off by NYPD Due to Domestic Dispute

The area outside 1 University Place, near Weinstein, is blocked off by the NYPD because of a domestic dispute in the building. The couple has barricaded themselves inside their apartment, and the police are bringing up power tools. The police are clearing out the area and bringing out an inflatable device to break the fall in case anyone jumps.

An NYU security guard on the scene said, “I hope they break in. I’m trying to get a sandwich over there!”

Update 7:13 pm: According to an NYU security guard, the police said that the husband barricaded in the apartment told the NYPD that if they came in, he would kills his wife and jump out the window.

Update 9/6: Fortunately, the incident ended without injury (aside from some brutal hangovers). WSN reported late last night:

The NYPD’s Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information said two men were taken into custody then transferred to a nearby hospital. The men were brothers and both were intoxicated. No charges will be filed and no one was physically injured.

More photos after the jump.

The police finally got him and took him away in one of the 5,000 ambulances. One police officer said that the guy was just really drunk.
Pretty lame though, the fact that he never jumped, especially with that big inflatable balloon thing sitting out there. Hell, I would’ve jumped just to land on that balloon thing! It looked like fun. Oh well.

The comments of the NYU security guard, and master-of the-universe Tyer Kochanski are really depressing. Sadly, they reflect the sort of selfishness and cynicism that those of us who live around NYU observe all too often as we walk down the street. Maybe a little less self-absorption and a little more self-reflection is in order.
