NYU is such a hip, plugged-in campus that we have text message alerts set up in case of emergencies! We also have an estimated 894032 listservs, which unfortunately is just one way of saying that your inbox gets spammed approximately ten times a day with info on NYU events that you probably don’t give a shit about. (Hint: we list the good ones for you). Below, some of the worst spammers on campus, and tips on how to unsubscribe from unwanted NYU e-mail attention.
My top two spammers are Amanda Gallocher and Wasserman. As you can tell from the screenshot, Amanda Gallocher sends A LOT of e-mails about senior class council (three alone on April 23rd!). They usually revolve around “fun” campus events like senior formal or things with free food, which is actually sometimes okay. Every day at 4pm I also get this really sad “Hot Jobs!” e-mail from Wasserman that is usually comprised of Stern jobs for which I’m completely unqualified. I don’t know, I’m grumpy today and I’ve never had a lot of school spirit, so every time I get an e-mail from these two I scream, hit the nearest person/thing, then delete it.
Here are some contributions from some other staff members:
Sports writer Luis Paez Pumar says:
(From the Creative Writing Department): Scott Statland. Jesus christ, stop emailing me every day!
Multimedia Editor Rosie Gray says:
For Steinhardt it’s Stacy Rosenberg. If I ever find that lady I’m going to forcibly take her computer away from her.
Entertainment Editor Keyana Stevens says:
Jeremiah Newton, if you’re in Tisch. His emails are useful but gawd are there a lot of them.
Multimedia producer Ana Voci has a similar take:
Jeremiah Newton is big for film students. And the best part is that they are pretty much never original emails, he just fowards everyone the emails he receives.
National writer Vivek Nemana says:
Gallocher and Africa House. Don’t ask me why, but I get tons of email from Africa House.
Multimedia producer Andy Heriaud says:
Jay Newton has his own filter on my inbox. I used got get a lot from Bonita Engels, but not as much anymore. For some ungodly reason I keep getting emails from the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music. I have never and will never work with them.
Publisher Lily Q says:
Fucking Gallendar. I’ve spammed it so many times and it never dies
Granted, there’s definitely an upside to getting all of these messages. On a campus as spread out as NYU, e-mail is arguably the best way to communicate important information. I just wish they’d galvanize their resources and send out one big newsletter-type e-mail a day so that my Blackberry didn’t blink red 10x a day with mostly useless NYU info. And with so much e-mail coming my way, I never know which of it is important and which of it isn’t. I’ve frequently deleted e-mails that I thought were NYU spam even though they contained information I actually needed to know.
If you’re as frustrated with this entirely first world problem as we at NYU Local are, you can try to put a spam filter on the senders in Gmail (though as Lily suggested, this doesn’t always work). You can also unsubscribe from the listservs by sending a blank e-mail to the address designated at the bottom of the event e-mail. I wish I had realized that four years ago. And yes, I would like some cheese with this whine.

This post is absolutely genius, and not just because it’s the first time I’ve ever understood the “cheese with that whine” bit.
would you like a whamburger with your french cries?
shoutout- kid rock in joe dirt
It’s Monday and it’s raining and it’s finals, fuckall.
I mean seriously I know this is a really stupid thing to complain about but goddamn you Gallendar!!!
My weirdest NYU spam: I took a class in the Russian Department once and forgot to unsubscribe to the listserv and I still get all these emails about Russian Folk singalongs going on because evidently some Russian majors are really committed to that.
David Plouffe and Barack Obama.
this has bothered me forever but i never found the right forum for bitching about it. glad others feel my pain
Multimedia Producer Andy Heriaud should know that we only send out emails infrequently to invite NYU students to FREE events that we host that we think are worth sharing: like when we’ve hosted Pete Wentz, or Q-Tip or Alicia Keys. If you don’t like getting invitations to these sorts of free NYU events, simply delete them in your email box or filter your messages. If you WANT invitations to our events, check us out at http://www.clivedavisdepartment.com.
okay, seriously clive davis department? while it’s great that you’re hosting exciting and FREE campus events, you’re now SPAMMING this comments thread w/ that link and those plugs! come on.
Good ol’ Robert Campbell with the gen/sex department. I can’t remove myself from the list-serv for the sake of the occasional cool email that comes along, but damn, those weekly digests are a killer…
More annoying than spammy listservs: when someone hits “reply all” in their attempt to unsubscribe.
@Clive Davis Department Nobody wants to see Pete Wentz, even if it’s free.
@Clivester Pay me and maybe I’ll go see the Wentzanator.
Hey! I am the student worker at Africa House. If you don’t want our emails, just unsubscribe and I will take you off. It is really easy! The email is nyu.africa.house@gmail.com.
For politics students it’s definitely the Alexander Hamilton Program. It’s like 2 extra classes to get this certificate at graduation, and even though I never applied for the program I still get emails from them a few times a week… almost a year after I’ve graduated.
Sylvan Holloway and Kate Psomething from the Journalism department.
Clive,
Hey man, how are you? I’m glad the whole dept. got together behind a computer to tell me about how gracious I should be for their invitations. Clearly the lack of interest shown in your dept. warrants the barage of unsolicited emails I receive to your events. I’m sorry, I’ve upset you, Clive Davis Dept. or Recorded Music, but your emails do nothing but crowd my inbox. I’m sure your curriculum and events are top notch, but I have no need to go to them
All the best,
Multimedia Producer Andy Heriaud
Amanda Gallocher and Wasserman Center are also my #1 Spammers… but it’s easier to hate Amanda because its a single name. Well guess who I caught a glimpse of tonight at the Senior Strawberry & Champagne Toast? None other than Amanda Gallocher, sporting a soft-looking class of ’10 baseball 3/4 sleeve length tee. Smacked my lips and went in for it.
@Elana: YOU KISSED HER? Or do you mean you went in for the strawberries and champagne? How could you kiss someone who has caused you so much pain?
I did not kiss her. I filled up on oily fried finger foods, artificially enormous and cadmium red strawberries, and rolled my eyes at Amanda. (You didn’t get that from “smacked my lips?”)
Pat you are SO right about the Alexander Hamilton center. WTF is it anyway? I am a politics major and I have no idea. Leave me alone, Sarah Dickinson!
