Campus and police sources have confirmed that the death in NYU’s Bobst Library this morning appears to be a suicide.
Rumors have circulated that the NYPD had been investigating the death as a possible homicide. A high-ranking NYU source reports that the NYPD had been considering foul play until they discovered a suicide note left by the student in his dorm room. The NYPD’s press office has corroborated that report.
The NYU source also tells us that the body was, indeed, found on the lobby floor — lending further evidence to the theory that the student jumped.
While the library stacks are supposed to be closed past 1 a.m., our campus source says the elevators were neither locked nor shut off, and that — to their knowledge — the crime scene is also not monitored by security cameras.
For what it’s worth, our source says that these security oversights are something they expect the University will be promptly investigating.

@ David: Your speculation is insensitive and ridiculous. You’re proposing that someone carried a man inside bobst, and no one took notice? I’m struggling to believe that you yourself believe this far-fetched “Harriet the Spy” sequence of events. If you do, you should share it with some friends, and have them explain why it is so ludicrous. If not, you should be more sensitive with such a tragedy, and not post alternative (and paranoid?) alternatives to the story we’re learning. A lot of people are struggling with this tragedy, and your comments make it seem like you’re commenting on a novel you just read, speculating about the ending.

I wasn’t there, but I do recall hearing reports of a thud heard in LL1 at the alleged time of the suicide? If those reports are true, how are they explained, if not from the force of the body’s impact on the lobby floor?

I still don’t believe it was suicide. The note doesn’t necessarily mean suicide. There was a report there was no blood which is impossible. I’ve read another source that said he was found on his back. if i jumped from a building i would land on my legs/knee thus ending up on my stomach. finally, they say he texted his friend two hours before to meet him at a cafe for fries. That doesnt sound like someone who wanted to kill themselves. Heres what happened. Somebody wanted to kill him, i don’t know why but they did. They knew people had jumped off the library before so they killed him in some other manner and left the body in the library. Now they needed an alibi. they used the victims phone to text the friend to make people believe he was still alive. That would give him time to make a phony suicide note or plant an old one if this guy was depressed. It was the perfect plan. he knew police wouldnt do an autopsy, or more specifically a toxicology report, if it was a suicide. If i had to guess id say the guy who found the body or “witness” might be involved somehow.
