According to the Washington Square News, smoking is now prohibited in NYU residence hall courtyards, which includes Carlyle, Third North and University Court. Notices have recently been posted around the dorms telling residents that they can no longer smoke in the courtyards, where they can look hip while smoking Djarums in their pajamas.
NYU spokesman John Beckman said the ban was a response to complaints that cigarette odor was entering dorm rooms through windows, which apparently is a bad thing.
Photos after the jump.
However, any resident of these dorms would agree that the courtyards are primarily utilized as a stress-busting smoking lounge, especially during mid-terms. Last year, I myself lived in a Carlyle dorm facing the courtyard and do not remember ever smelling cigarette smoke. Granted, my roommate was from Amsterdam, so my room typically reeked of many other herbs.
The ban also comes only a few days after Mayor Michael Bloomberg suggested prohibiting smoking in many public areas (parks and beaches). So, no smoking in NYU courtyards or in Washington Square Park? NYU smokers can’t get a (cig) break.
In a related story, smoking marijuana is still not permitted in NYU dorms.

The way it was explained to us during move in was that it was a NYC ordinance rather than an NYU policy, stating NYC considered a courtyard an “enclosed area” and thus smoking is not permitted inside of them.
@Phillip Then there are about a million NYC restaurants breaking that rule.
Wow. Who the hell complained about cigarette-smoke odor entering their dorm rooms? Seriously, what kind of pussy/neurotic loser who clearly doesn’t belong in the city would actually make that kind of complaint?
Even though I don’t live in housing anymore, my heart breaks for NYU freshmen who will not have memories of the courtyard in Third North. Seriously, what are you supposed to do after a night of binge drinking in your common room? What the hell is the purpose of the courtyard during the 7 months of winter if not for the promise of nicotine?
NYU is really taking a shit on its students this year. Next we’ll find out elevator service has been discontinued at all NYU buildings in an effort to go green…
@Leo PREACH. Without latenight courtyard cigarette breaks, how will we ever endure this crippling recession, which has robbed us of free printing? I feel particularly bad for the students at Third North who have just been royally fucked this year. There is officially no good reason to live at Third North anymore.

Gather any NYU smoker you can find, invade the Third North courtyard, and just light up.
@Jess PREACH. I’ll never forget the Total Bro who gave me his Webster Hall wristband and told me he “wished I’d been there tonight” even though I’d never met him before, didn’t ever catch his name, and didn’t go to Webster Hall that night. Those kinds of connections are truly the social education NYU students deserve.
LOL Henry were you spying on me and Josh’s IMs all the way from Prague? We totally discussed planning a violent revolt that consisted solely of grumpily smoking in the courtyard. VIVA LA REVOLUTION!

And you need to pick a color too. Maybe gray. Or fuchsia.

NYC’s smoking rate has plummeted to 15.8%, one of the lowest in the country.
Trendoid poseurs and “neurotic losers” who stupidly fell for the hype and got themselves so addicted they have to feed the nicotine meter for 7 minutes an hour, every hour, for the rest of their waking lives, “don’t belong in the city” and should take a bridge or tunnel out.

Woo! My pics!
But seriously, this ban is stupid. If I want to smoke after a night of heavy drinking, I wanna be able to do it in my courtyard!

Thank god I don’t live in dorms anymore. This seriously would just encourage me to smoke in my room, which, despite the fact that there wasn’t a ban in place at the time, I did every year I lived in housing anyway.
I really don’t miss towling doors.
