The New York University Student Senators Council had this to say in a statement concerning the torture video in which Sheikh Issa of the U.A.E. is seen torturing a grain merchant:
The Student Senators Council strongly condemns the acts depicted on an ABC News video implicating Sheikh Issa bin Zayed al Nahyan, brother of the Abu Dhabi’s crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed, and agents of the government of the U.A.E. in acts of torture. Moreover, the SSC calls upon the University touse all tools at its disposal to seek justice and to uphold its strong commitment to human rights.
Before moving forward with a joint program, it is essential that NYU make every effort to guarantee the safety and security of students, faculty and administrators. The SSC also calls on the Abu Dhabi government to condemn the acts depicted on the video and to ensure a just resolution, punishing those involved in acts of torture, after proceedings in open courts meeting international standards of justice. The SSC also calls for a full investigation of governmental tolerance for all such violations of human rights and a program of compensation for all victims.
Now, we wait to see if the administration says or does anything more beyond what NYu Abu Dhabi International Communications Director Josh Taylor released in his statement this morning.

^^^ Sadly true.

Why should a private university reveal their overall operating budget?

@Jor-El Sanders — I’m not saying they should have to do so. But I believe it is extremely naive for the Student Senators Council to expect anything to come out of their declaration. NYU is, as you demonstrate, accountable to nobody.

They are accountable to the people who pay them: students. You can show your frustration with NYU by transferring or complaining. It’s not like NYU has committed a crime… (and if they had, they would be accountable to the government)

Yeah, right, okay… like that’s really going to make a difference. Great verbal slap on the wrist with no real consequences! Your administration won’t even release the details of the project or the university’s overall operating budget. And you honestly think they care about what you think? Get real…
