You might think that the cash we fork over to NYU every year would afford us the computer technology to reunite the original Beatles lineup for a concert each spring, but 2009 will just culminate with 2007’s almost famous White Rabbits. The band is back with a new album, It’s Frightening, and will be headlining Strawberry Fest’s free afternoon show at 566 La Guardia Place in between Washington Square South and West 3rd St.
The event is scheduled for May 1st, so pray for nice weather. Joining the Rabbits will be appropriately independent acts Motel Motel, Golden Triangle, Teengirl Fantasy, and We Are The Arm, sharing sets that last from noon until 4 p.m.
I guess you could chalk it up to space restrictions, but why is it that NYU does not orchestrate a school-uniting, drugged out weekend party marathon like most universities’ Spring Fling? I know, I know—”We don’t have a campus or school spirit!”—but is our lack of you have to be there events a symptom or a cause?

I just think its great that bands will finally play Strawberry Fest (first time ever!). Just the sheer number of really great bands that play NYU makes up for the fact that they are all ‘indie.’ Take a chance and check out White Rabbits. You might actually like 2007’s ‘almost made it’ band.

a) Dropkick Murphys suck stale vomit. So your sister’s small state school couldn’t get anyone better, or they don’t have good taste. Or both.
b) Golden Triangle rule
c) check out Teengirl Fantasy for yourself.

White Rabbits are great, I think people should take a chance on this show & come out to Strawberry Festival because it’s always a lot of fun. Program Board works hard on it… and I believe this is the first year we’ve turned it into a concert event. So, definitely show up!
As much as I’m into the thought of a real spring concert — I just flew to Nashville for three days just to catch Q-Tip, T.I., N.E.R.D., and the Flaming Lips at Vanderbilt’s Rites of Spring — there’s really no way we could stage one at NYU. We simply don’t have the open space available, and even if we did it wouldn’t be nearly isolated enough. Schools with campuses can get away with big-name acts playing on past midnight because they have the open area to put up a stage and the buildings that surround that area tend to belong only to the University. I mean, we bring real acts to the surprise concert at the beginning of each year, and Skirball certainly works for a venue to host them. But the idea of having bands play at a spring festival is to have an outdoor concert, and there’s really no way that NYU could set that up, and a couple of lesser-known “indie” bands is certainly better than nothing.

I don’t know why anyone’s disappointed. We live in a city that thrives off of independent music and art. I think it’s great that the Program Board is supportive of that spirit. White Rabbits made a really great album that all of my friends and I loved. Motel Motel makes awesome music. Check out “Coffee” by them, and you’ll surely swoon. Plus, they’re a really nice set of guys.
Personally, I’m very excited about this year’s line up. And who can resist NYC’s longest strawberry shortcake?

Oh, I forgot to mention, a lot of people have heard of these bands, so yes, NYU can get bands that people have heard of. Just depends on what type of music you listen to, I guess. But…to each his own.

[...] sure to swing by LaGuardia Place today (between Bobst and Kimmel) from 12-4 for some games, live music, freebies, interactive booths, and a piece of that really freaking long strawberry [...]

This is kind of sad. My sister goes to a small state school and they got the Dropkick Murphys to come for their spring week. NYU can’t even get a band anyone’s heard of?
