The TBNYU! Kimmel Occupation of 2009 is Over

The third floor of Kimmel has been cleared and no arrests made. None of the 13 demands of TBNYU! have been met and there were never any extensive meetings with the administration about meeting them All roads lead home download

Updates to follow as we continue to sort this out – it’s been a wild ride.

All information on housing has been moved to this post.

As students struggled to hold a jumble of table and chairs that blocked both entrances to the dining room, she said, a metal gate that separated the dining room from cash registers and shelves of food lifted and security guards and administration officials rushed into the room. She said that the officials asked students for ID and photographed them, and later returned with letters addressed to N.Y.U. students in the group that read in part “you are suspended from, and classified as a persona non grata at New York University.”

As I watch all of this unfold from my office that has seen at least 2000 jobs lossed in the past 6 months, I have to fight the urge to walk down to NYU and start kicking college kids asses…

there are real issues facing this city and this country. This whole group of whiney spoiled yellowed skin from not eating any meat children could have spent the last 3 days helping the homeless who sleep in the park outside their warm, paid for dorm rooms… but nope – they want scholarships for palestinians and tofu burgers to help make them feel better about the fact that the majority of these ingrates have not had to worry about food or shelter in their entire lives.

as i hiring manager, i say publish their names and give me a copy. There would be one Fortune 500 company NOT hiring these fools.

@Kevin: According to Khimji they will be escorted to housing by security to collect some of their belongings but they are immediately kicked out of housing. The administration extended alternative housing until they can figure out where they’re living; some of the students accepted while some declined.

Thanks for the update…btw @peter Gauss youre a F**cking dick….. These kids have my deepest respect for not being pussy’s like mr.gauss over hereand bob j. and actually stepping out and doing something. Thats the exact problem with us these days we bitch and moan but we never take action, these kids have inspired many to take action, and be active, instead of just sitting in lecture halls, and classrooms discussing what we could do to fix things, or what did happen, or talking about other people who actually had the balls to do something.

and take action? what they have done is tantemount to taking over a chuck e cheese.

AND lastly, its not like all of a sudden in Feb of 2009 NYUs policies were listed. When these kids APPLIED to go there and when they wet themselves and bragged about be ACCEPTED, they should have looked into the policies a bit better.

I though college was for education… apparently it just makes some a bit more ignorant. Fucking hippies.

John rayberg
Feb 20, 2009 15:03

@John Kentucky,

Your commending a bunch of children whos first demand was protection for their own asses. Let’s protest freely, as long as we have to face no consequences. Yes they may have had the balls to walk into the place but they certainly did not have the balls to face what was coming to them based on that first demand. Balls and brains are two different things. Maybe if they had both people wouldnt have insulted them. Sadly they didn’t,

Logic
Feb 20, 2009 15:03

The sudden sadism that’s coming from NYU students and alum with respect to these students and their punishments is bizarre. Even if one grants that the protesters were misguided, the anger directed at these students seems excessive, especially since I don’t see the student body up in arms about any other apparent wastes of their tuition. John Sexton takes weekly, first-class flights to and from Abu Dhabi. NYU has the 2nd-worst financial aid of any school in the entire country, something that could be improved as has been shown time and time again, but has been ignored in favor of the expansion of the University (in terms of real estate, not the actual services provided to students.) The anger directed at these protesters seems, in comparison, pathetic.

Let’s get this all straight. Those children were morons, and so is John Kentucky, discussion ended.

Peter Gauss
Feb 20, 2009 15:14

@john kentuck: whatever spaz. injustices – where is the fucking injustice in all of sudden realizing there is a list of policies and rules? its like waking up one day and realizing, oh shit, I have a lease and CANT shit in the stairwell?

and as far as NYU costing too much – its NYU in NYC – everything costs too much… AND wasnt the tuition listed when they got their acceptance letter? or did they hope they could renogiate once they got there.

so school all you want, bump your chest and call people names – but in the end all this is about is children with an inflated sense of self worth.

Peter Gauss
Feb 20, 2009 15:19

and this is a good lesson learned. if these kids had actually investigated how the school would use their money BEFORE going there, they could have made in informed decision and perhaps gone to another institution that fit more with their sense of public policy.

“If standing up for justice, demanding ethics, and preventing extremism are for hippies, I’d rather be a hippie than have to say on that fateful day of Judgement that I did nothing tangible for my fellow human beings.”

I wouldn’t necessarily call half of the things they did as being “FOR their fellow human beings”
They occupied their fellow students’ space, restricting access to everyone but themselves. They gave a bad name to NYU students and lost the school some respect. Their first demand was about themselves and nobody else. I understand that they were trying to accomplish something for the “greater good”, but if they had really wanted to get NYU to agree to their demands, they would have chosen a more civil way of doing it.
OR, they could have raised money for Gaza and the Palestinians themselves. OR go out and do some community service! A little help goes a long way.

Feb 20, 2009 15:41

@Peter
I personally don’t agree with the method of TBNYU’s actions or with some of the excessiveness of their demands. However, you continue to mention how students’ decision to attend NYU somehow correlates with not questioning the expenses associated with such attendance. I am glad I decided to attend NYU and expected (rightly) to pay a hefty sum as NYU is a private, distinguished institute situated in New York City. However, I don’t think that it is too much of a request to expect a certain amount of exposure with regards to the budget and how exactly my “attendance” money is being spent. Surely, this request holds even more validity in light of the economic crisis and should probably be addressed by the administration (albeit through negotiation and not excessive “protesting” attempts)

Feb 20, 2009 16:08

and this is a good lesson learned.

It’s actually a lesson that could be no more easily learned anywhere than in postwar Germany. Every single one of the many supportive cogs–with a few rare exceptions–did far better than the average member of resistance. Time spent in jail or the camp didn’t increase your pension, while producing the gas or other helpful material as a loyal employee, or escorting Jews out of their houses surely did.

It’s also very interesting, that the authoritarian conformity supporters span the whole spectrum from left to right . Preaching the necessity of looking for himself first and foremost (Kentucky – that’s how must felt under the Nazis) and helping the homeless (Gauss ) instead of protesting. … Then and now.

Unfortunately this was to be expected. Harsh repressive treatment will keep other students in line.

And no I am not making comparisons between Nazi-Germany and the US. But the authoritarian mindset is pretty constant over the ages.

Yes, we cannot. Yes we can, what we always could be selfish.

Feb 20, 2009 18:35

@ PETER:

You smell. Alright I’m warmed up now.

You say that these kids should have investigated how the school they’re applying to spends their money, how they KNEW the rules and policies of the school, and yet they’re whining…. So you think these kids WENT to NYU just to complain about it?

Do you realize that everything that anyone ever protested were issues of a larger system that THEY ARE A PART OF. Rosa Parks probably KNEW how they were going to treat her, so she probably shouldn’t whine about it… Peter, you’re a fucking douche.

First off, their demand for transparency is not much to ask for–> they have a few things that they don’t like, so they’re taking action to have their voice heard. Granted the way they went about it did not turn out too well for them, but that’s what happened during protests. And you say they don’t have brains? Well, WAKE UP, if you go to a college that costs you thousands of dollars, wouldn’t you want to make sure that what you do won’t get you expelled? These kids can’t be Ghandi and ignore the consequences because they actually HAVE something to lose–> their future.

So let’s get it straight, peter goose is WHACK and the protesters, no matter what way you look at it, risked A LOT to just be heard by NYU.

P.S. He’s also a fucking, immature, ignorant, fuckfaced prick who thinks he’s the fucking shit–> he’s so rich he probably should have better things to do than argue on the internet–> but he likes the thrill, cuz his life is so fucking boring, he doesn’t have beef with anybody face to face, all those who support him, you guys are fucking cool!

Feb 21, 2009 14:34

Okay,

So here’s the thing. I’ll admit that I have little or no idea what the 13 “demands” set out by the protester’s are (though it seems like a horrible idea to demand anything from those whom control your potential future), I understand the reasoning behind their protests.

I understand that they are unhappy with the costs of one of the world’s most expensive cities, and were caught apparently unprepared by costs which anyone else would have seen coming. The chances are, protesting seemed like the prolific thing to do for them and with little or no thought as to what might actually be accomplished sought out to be heard. Now, they only succeeded in looking like douche bags and hurt themselves more than anything with misguided conditions for an institution which could care less about the financial situation of it’s indiviual students. (Because let’s be honest here, NYU is a business like any other.)

@Peter. I understand where you’re coming from, but the fact of the matter is these are children experimenting in the only way they knew how. They had seen the videos of powerful speeches by MLK and the steel in Rosa Park’s defiance and had aspirations to remind the world that the dream of a country full of people free to speak their mind still exists.

@John. I just want you to realize that you’re now using a newspaper forum to launch personal attacks on people. How sad for you.

@Peter Gauss is WHACK. Changing your SN doesn’t make you any less of a douche, John.

@ EVERYONE ELSE WHOM IS AT NYU.
There is nothing wrong with protest so long as it is constructive, nonviolent, and nonintrusive.
You want to make your point? Set up a communty “college sale” and give out / sell clothes and items no longer wanted by students. Old clothes, c.d’s, shoes ~ anything and everything you can think of.
Draw local media to your cause. Do something to help your fellow human beings WHILE you make a point. Pass out flyers on the street corner as people enter or leave and keep it a fresh issue in everyone’s mind. The key will be numbers.

It’ll work much better than trenching yourself in someone else’s building with no supplies and no purpose.

I swear to fucking god, if these kids sue the school and one fucking dime of my tuition money has to go towards paying for legal representation for the university, i will go apeshit.
