Hardcore TBNYU! supporters took advantage of the mild weather today to protest in a flash-ier way. Two girls stood outside Kimmel topless (warning: photos below the jump) proclaiming “Show your tits for TBNYU!” The shirtless protesters hung around for half an hour as TV news crews asked filmed their backs during interviews. Apparently the girls do in fact attend NYU Prague duet download. Photos by Sandy Gordon.

I fully support this type of protest.

Fantastic – thank God somebody got better photos than my piece of crap.
@Nicole He – Agreed. Feminists putting down male oppression we are not.
But seriously – could this turn into any more of a circus? I’m failing to see how this is encouraging the University to take TBNYU seriously.

@Nate Berkopec: 100% agreed.
i don’t see how NYU can take this circus seriously. demands such as clarity with regard to endowment, tuition, etc. are one thing, and possibly justified… but LEADING the list of demands with “amnesty for all parties involved” is a joke.
also there is NO focus from what i can tell. specifically, investigating war profiteers, providing scholarships for Palestinian students and sending supplies to Gaza are mentioned in the list of demands. these are noble ideas but they can be accomplished in a multitude of ways besides staging a protest or sit-in. just start a student group and raise sufficient funds to provide a scholarship and then grow the organization from there… the same student group could get the wheels in motion to accomplish the other worldly goals as well.
but the NYU-focused demands are also puzzling. demanding student groups have priority for reserving space in buildings? of COURSE student groups have priority… i’m guessing the student groups are just not getting their reservation requests in early enough. demanding an investigation into lifting the Coke ban? that’s ridiculous… Coke likely pays NYU for the rights to distribute its products, so if you don’t want those products, then don’t purchase them. you want collective bargaining for TAs? teaching assistants receive substantial compensation in the form of an advanced degree from a great institution, as well as discounted tuition in most cases… many are not even good teachers, so what more do they deserve?
my advice would be to go back to the drawing board and come up with demands that are attainable and that cover topics directly affecting the NYU community. otherwise you will never be taken seriously by the faculty.
i am a graduate of Wash U in St. Louis and have never attended NYU. from where i sit it seems these students are acting extremely immature and lack a grasp of reality. they will and SHOULD face whatever consequences are coming their way.

I really don’t see why these girls need to go topless to support TBNYU’s cause. Seems like activists on campus are rallying to milk the occupation for the sole purpose of protest.
John Lempka
I was formulating a list of fake demands that I would have printed and handed out to onlookers had not Wash. Pl. computer lab been… Wash. Pl. computer lab (that is: impossibly crowded), which included: mandatory gay marriage, cannabis on campus cash, no Friday recitations, and *nudist solidarity*. Would it were that these demands were actually *fake*.
Kathy Davis
What the hell is this supposed to do, exactly? It’s just an excuse to take their shirts off and pretend it’s not for attention. They don’t even have breasts – I thought the first one was a really thin boy.
Total misquoting (I’m the tattooed one). We never said “show your tits for NYU.”
We DID say, “Exposure til Disclosure” “NYU I have nothing to hide, what are you hiding!” and “NYU I can’t afford clothes anymore, let me see your budget!”
We wanted to express solidarity, we wanted to draw attention to the occupation, and we wanted to do so in a creative and radical way. We have no shame about our bodies, it wasn’t sexual, it was pairing words with action.
TBNYU! is doing the radical and important thing. We wanted to get more people talking about it.
Sorry about the misquote, Keri – there were a lot of things being shouted while you guys were outside Kimmel. Thanks for using the site to post your views.

RE: marshall harris
“but the NYU-focused demands are also puzzling. demanding student groups have priority for reserving space in buildings? of COURSE student groups have priority… i’m guessing the student groups are just not getting their reservation requests in early enough.”
mr. harris obviously has no idea what he is talking about and appears to be quite the bed-buddy with NYU beaurocratic bullshit. as a two-year long member of a prominant NYU feminist organization (NOW-NYU), let me inform you, mr. harris, that it has been over a half-decade long battle for the women’s community at NYU to have a women’s center implemented in kimmel. NYU has a LGBTQ center, a center for multi-cultural studies, a center for spirituality, ALL WITHIN THE KIMMEL BUILDING. But they have been consistently denying years and years of well-orchestrated, highly-supported requests for a women’s center. As an officer for NOW, let me tell you that the need for a women’s center here at NYU is imperative. Due to the size of the university, it is almost impossible for all the various feminist, women’s, organizations to form a united from and keep each other informed on what they are doing, on what they need. There is also no outlet for women feeling the same type of pressures that many LGBTQ youth at our school may feel. It is simply ridiculous.
Maybe you should be more critical of administration and power, mr. harris, before you talk about things that you don’t have ANY idea about.
PS… we consistently have our room taken away from us even though we have had the same room and time spot for over 4 years.

Maybe if TBNYU had one, clear message all this would be effective.
All I get from this is something about opening the Gaza Strip Club. A new NYU Study Abroad campus.
Is that what’s happening?
Jenny Cervantes
@Rachael Ninja,
While I think it’s great that you guys are fighting for your convictions, I’m a little confused with your post. Does TBNYU have any demands that correlate with those of NOW-NYU? Also, I’m not really sure why there’s a need for a Women’s Center within Kimmel. In my understanding, feminists are fighting for equality. Why ask for special treatment by requesting a “Women’s center”? Also, how will segregating ourselves from the male population create equality?
Finally, I really can’t see how anyone who saw these pictures would be able to take a feminist movement seriously. While the idea behind it was good, it’s pretty clear that few people grasped the message you were trying to convey. All they saw was naked women trampsing around outside of Kimmel, which probably doesn’t make many people respect you or your organizations.

15 minutes of fame and their face in a newspaper. Mom and Dad would be so proud.
@ Jenny
The point of the women and gender resource center (not just women’s center) would be so that student groups on campus could coordinate with one another. There is too much of a divide between the feminist/gender related groups on campus. It is difficult to get events publicized and to work as a coalition of groups if we have no space to meet. The TBNYU! demand for student groups’ priority when requesting rooms/spaces, ESPECIALLY within Kimmel, correlates with this because of our lack of meeting spaces right now. NOW-NYU wants transparency and budget disclosure as well — it is important that we make sure that there are no disparities in pay based on gender. As is, women in the US are paid much less than men and we would like to ensure that isn’t happening at NYU. While not all of the NOW-NYU members agree with every demand made by TBNYU! many (if not all) of us support their efforts to get students’ voices heard.
As to the public nudity, I have no full comment right now. I’d like to get my thoughts about that straight before commenting on it.

What a pair of prostitutes. Low class pieces of filth like this should not be allowed to attend NYU.
Since I kind of facilitated this post, I’m just going to give my two cents as I procrastinate from studying Econ.
I don’t think stripping down proves the point these girls are trying to make. People are easily distracted by bare skin. Though I’m sure this kind of protest raises awareness of an issue, it does nothing to raise that issue’s credibility.
That said, they aren’t “low class pieces of filth.” My policy usually is, if you are going to be mean at least be funny. But we’re all entitled to an opinion. My personal one? Anyone brave enough to walk around topless outside Kimmel deserves some credit, but as a means to an end it is a pretty shitty one.
Shannon Smith
“Anyone brave enough to walk around topless outside Kimmel deserves some credit, but as a means to an end it is a pretty shitty one.”
Do you really think it takes bravery to embarrass your school mates and your parents? I can only imagine what the moms and dads of these chain-smoking, tattooed tarts are thinking: “I toil to send my daughter to NYU, and here she is telling the world she wants transparency because she can;t afford clothes.” If the whore can afford a tattoo and cigarettes, then I’ll bet she can afford clothes.

I got to say to all you involved in this, you kinda botched it. I’m sure you guys have a point, but you come across as whiny children and idiotic idealists, sort of like SDS-wannabes except with more money and less imagination. I’ve been following this on another blog, and I gotta say, the nudity was kinda the icing on the retarded cake. Nothing says “I support social justice” like nipples after all. The impression you’re left with is that a bunch of suburban-upper-middle-class kids got bored of casual sex and plentiful drugs and decided to protest something.
Don’t bother telling me the above isn’t true and that I have no idea what I’m talking about. I’m sure it isn’t and I know I don’t. I’m just telling you how it comes across from an outside perspective. The general debate seems to revolve around whether to mock or pity. Mock is winning.
Rob F
This is absolutely hilarious.
- A bunch of students protest for “responsibility”, yet hold as one of their demands that they not be held responsible for their actions.
- A couple of “feminists” try to draw attention to the protest by standing outside and making themselves into sex objects.
This is practically a parody of late 60’s protests.
What’s next, black Klan members a la Chappelle’s Show?

At least in the south the girls have curves. If they were any flatter this wouldn’t be illegal.
R J
These young women have earned tribute and a right to be proud of their efforts. While the occupation and demands of TBNYU are open to a variety of critiques, they seem to reflect well-intentioned goals, and one can hope that they will help enliven student recognition of protest’s value. Regardless, these two women used a strategy that involved humor and courage to enliven interest. It always takes courage to expose oneself in a way that you know will expose you to criticism and ridicule. Those who have criticized them for not being feminist or being too sexual might think a bit deeper. Were it two attractive young men stripped to their waists, what would people say? Two attractive young women should be able to do the same without having to suffer challenges to their political integrity or be chastised as practicing sexual exploitation by others who conceive themselves feminists. Those of us who lived through and participated in the student activism of the 60s and 70s can recognize the creative, humorous spirit that makes this effort a good strategy.
The misplaced criticisms of the women’s feminist correctness (their display in service of a political end being much more consistent with an agenda of full equality for women than the suggestion that they should be more sexually reserved) and of the quality of their bodies (inappropriate however they appeared, but silly in the face of them both being highly attractive by conventional standards) provide strong support that their actions were well-conceived. They reveal unfortunate limits in people’s acceptance of women’s freedom to act in ways equal to that of men, limits that span the political spectrum and that (still) need to be addressed.
RJ
Just FYI
@ R J
An excellent point, and I don’t think anyone here would argue that they don’t have guts. But their means of protest are limited by what they’re protesting. What if they had had a bake sale to raise money to combat the notion that all women should do is cook and clean? While the personal attacks are certainly misplaced, the irony of using yourself as a sex object to draw attention to sexual inequality, such as women being treated as sex objects, is there, like it or not.
And I assure you people would mock the men in same “what does this have to do with anything?” vein. The whole nudity = justice connection needs to be strengthened.

news from the front line sort of shows how stupid this whole thing is:
2:05 – So before all hell broke loose, I sat down with Emily Stainkamp (CAS ‘11) to talk about how food was going to get in here. She told me that NYU made a “bizarre” and “paternalistic” move by “[offering] to bring [them] food.” TBNYU said that the food would have to be vegan and NYU agreed. But then TBNYU decided that it couldn’t accept food from Aramark because the “outsource to prison labor.” Stainkamp said, “Why can’t our friends just bring us food?…Our food, our space.”
Helen Manning
@ Shannon Smith:
Who the fuck are you to judge the worth of someone else based on one snippet of their existence? I mean, I just read your incredibly close-minded, judgmental and rude comments, and I still can’t call you a low class piece of filth with any certainty.
You clearly don’t know these girls, because they are two of the most interesting and intelligent people I’ve encountered in New York, and not for lack of competition. They are not tarts, whores, or filth. And they’re certainly not inclined toward shrewish behavior as you seem to be. (And I say this based on your comments, not complete assumption.)
Yeah, they took their shirts off, and guess what? It worked. Consider the degree of attention they’ve inspired because they’re comfortable with their bodies. Consider the degree of attention they’ve brought this blog, which it completely deserves, btw. They did what they sought to do: they, without crossing any of their personal boundaries or harming their self-worth, did something somewhat radical, but incredible simple to garner attention for their cause. PLUS IT’S COMPLETELY HILARIOUS.
So what if it’s not to your taste. It doesn’t mean that you know anything about them.
Perhaps I’m reading too much into it, but your projection of how their parents would feel-
I can only imagine what the moms and dads of these chain-smoking, tattooed tarts are thinking: “I toil to send my daughter to NYU, and here she is telling the world she wants transparency because she can;t afford clothes.”
-suggests that you’re the loan-free type. Let me say this: not everyone can actually afford NYU, and you shouldn’t assume that every person is counting on Mommy until graduation. Many of us are willingly accruing debt for the privilege of this education, the privilege of being subjected to your biased, bullshit judgment.
Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if the people you’re criticizing, the people you’re suggesting NYU shouldn’t even accept, are far more highly valued by NYU in terms of scholarships and grants than you are.
So Shannon, don’t worry about how proud their parents are of them; instead, you should simply consider how you reflect on your own family and your school. As your peer, I’m far more ashamed of you for your idiocy than I would be of any NYU student who felt the need to feel the sun on his or her junk.
Also, @ JH:
It’s not illegal for women to go topless in NYC.
And shut up about how thin they are. Any bigger, and you all would be calling them out for being too fat.
Actually, to everyone criticizing their femininity, especially Nicole He: seriously? Way to uphold bullshit standards of beauty. You’re all just peeved because either you don’t look as good naked, you don’t have the balls to be naked in public, or you’re just being assholes to be funny. I’m sure some of you would look just as masculine, if not more so, were you stripped to the waist. The rest of us, and I include myself in this, would be criticized for being overly-feminine, if body-fat is the measuring yard.
I’d also like to point out that their actions were fully in line with their specific cause, hence the tag-line, Exposure Til Disclosure. They weren’t topless and sporting signs saying “Don’t treat me like a sexual object, but please appreciate my nipples!”
As members of Breasts Not Bombs we stand in solidarity with these women who have exhibited. tremendous POWER to get attention by simply removing their shirts. Those who have immature responses, whether it be disgust, or perverse and disgusting comments are the ones who bare their ignorance and disrespect for the feminine, the source of life, the mother. The judgements on the size of these women’s breasts, or their need or right to expose them in political protest are an expression of one’s own shame about their bodies and puritan ethics. We bare our Breasts to protect the definition of decency and hold signs to define what is truly indecent like investing in genocide. If you don’t like the protest just turn your head. If women were safe to be bare breasted this world would be a much safer place.
Chris Hopson
Didn’t New York pass a law that it’s legal for females to go shirtless just as it is for men? I’m pretty sure they did. So this isn’t illegal. It’s the same as if two dudes were standing outside without a shirt on. Besides, they’re just booblets. It’s not like they’re showing sexual organs. Where are the nude Peta members? They do it right! HA!
Just FYI
Hahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, you guys are ridiculous. So much discussion about nudity, so little about the issues that it is supposedly bringing attention to. Nudity is great, good for you, but your point has been completely lost. I mean, Breasts Not Bombs? It comes across as completely disconnected and prevents anyone from taking you seriously. Just look at this blog: a bunch of sarcastic assholes clashing with obnoxiously self-righteous feminists. You come across as sheltered and your concerns come across as fake. People are laughing at this protest, not yelling. Keep digging guys: strip.

Women are just as free to be what they would like as every other group of people that have been oppressed previously in this nation. They have equal rights as males and same opportunities as everyone else. I support them having a belief, but in all honesty this protest won’t be able to fix any problems you say you have. If you want to be completely equal as males than why not protest not being forced to sign up for a draft when your 18? Or is that something you’d prefer leaving to men because it doesn’t best suit a woman.
Alec L
Small boobies…
@Helen Manning: I’m certainly not criticizing their breasts, nor their femininity. My mom wasn’t either, really, and there was no link in my comment between their breasts and a “standard of beauty.” Maybe it says something else that you assumed that the criticism was there.
You Suck
You both suck as people and as protestors. I will not however resort to calling you two ugly because thats besides the point, now isn’t it? But really, TBNYU is the most embarrassing thing I think I’ve ever witnessed pertaining to a University protest. If you really had to resort to breaking someones ARM (douche bags) you should of learned how much you hated the school before you payed to go to it, under full knowledge that it keeps its budget and spending private, because you knew full well it was a PRIVATE SCHOOL. You both are horrible people. Go die.

Very nice breasts gals, I must say.
Too bad you’re both smoking. That says that you two “feminists” are so dumb you can’t even figure out that smoking isn’t exactly the healthiest of choices for women. Seriously, smoking is not much of a feminist statement to be making for gals known as feminist ninjas.

Your action made this old second-wave feminist feel hopeful and proud — and so does your articulate explanation of the issues. When you evoke so much explicit woman hating, you know you’re onto a taboo that needs exposure. So — I’ll be watching your web page to see when you might be doing it again, maybe 60 year old nipples would add a useful dimension to the statement (and I know the woman haters love to see old nipples).
Cynthia Dwyer
Hi Kerri, I just want you to know that there are reasons behind the lewd and lacivous laws we have. I do not go to NYU nor do I know anyone who does. I have no affiliation with the university whatsoever. I just happened to be passing by with my twin 10 year old sons who happen to see your little display. Needless to say, I was shocked for them. Why did you do this to me? Why did you do this to my children? They have nothign to do with your problems or issues. You may be perfectly at ease with your bodies but you stole a part of my childrens’ youth. I know you are young and feel that it is ok to do whatever comes to mind that you think is right. Problem is, being youthful and ignorant, you failed to consider the potential fallout and unintended consequences of your actions. This was stupid and selfish on your part. So, to get your message out, you feel its ok to hurt innocent children. I hope that nothing like this happened to you as a child and I certainly hop that nothing like this happens to your children should you have any. Rather than getting your self centered message out is a totally childish and illegal way, you irreprarably harmed me and my children. For this you will never be forgiven.
Pa Blumi
Stole their youth? You are funny! WHo steals youth better than those who fear the flesh?! Shame on over protective parents! Didn’t you know you live in the Village?!
What is really so “adult” about the body if neutrally and playfully displayed?!I This was very youthful activitity and hardly blameful. An experiment. But of course the demand for transparency might be better embodied by troops of women wearing only transprent raincoats. And men too, after all. OK they can all keep the pants on. We can negotiate.
However do take care not to distract from the message of accountability and of course DIVESTMENT from israel.
Most people do not wish to wake up and it may take more than this. Good Luck smiting the bourgeoisie.

They are not flat. They are normal. They are not enhanced. They have the guts to be themselves and take a stand for their beliefs. They are hot.

The sign says ninjas —pet peeve— ninja is the plural of ninja (you’re supposed to be there for an education).

Seems to me if these students don’t like the policy of NYU then don’t attend.
Do these students pay full tuition? I doubt it so they take financial aid to go to a great university and now put it down. Make a statement quit and let a student who wants a great education take your place. idiots

These kids are turning NYU into a laughingstock. Some of their demands are ridiculous–scholarships for students from Gaza!!?? Let the Arabs pay for them–why should we? Send monetary aid to Gaza–what does that have to do with NYU? Is that NYU’s job? NYU is a private university and does not have a foreign policy nor does it have any obligation–financial, moral, etc.–to the Gazan outlaws and murderers. As for transparency in the school’s financial matters–naked protests are not the way to find out the information–why would any responsible person give such information to a bunch of naked children? These kids should be expelled. They are devaluing the NYU degree.

It was a bit nippy out and as you can tell, their headlights are ON!

Of course,as a guy that can appreciate the shape of a nice pair,I suppose I’D BE THE ONE in trouble for inappropriate behavior if I took a picture. Were these D-bags arested for indecent exposure, like I WOULD BE if I pulled out my you-know-what ?

Okay, here’s how the world see’s the whole protest thing at NYU.
Hate to tell you all. … the facts are that those who can’t afford tuition at NYU or get our parents to pay for it..or chain ourselves to outrages students loans see this mostly as little rich kids acting out.
Nobody has taken it seriously cause, they all want amnesty! Those of us who live in the real world accept the concequences of our actions! We don’t try to get them to forgive us and think that someone would actually do that for acting badly.
Do you realize your image is only worsening in the area? You all just seem like spoiled kids trying to drive your mommies and daddies crazy.
Just figured you would like to know this….if your truly serious about your cause do something realistic.
Larry Sher
But why throw in your lot with Hamas and the rest of the goons in Gaza. What do you think the Hamasian response would be for Gazan women disrobing in protest of anything?
Rich Iott
Gosh, if that was the best I could muster up for boobs, I’d keep the hidden!!

When I see these pictures, it reminds me of my days as a Chief Lifeguard at Coney Island. At the end of a 100 degree day, our day time girlfriends came into our locker room with us, took showers like they were one of the guys, with us leaving the beach to go home to our wives.

Why is all liberal women ugly dogs?

I am with the SdS (Students for a Democratic Society) and this theatrical protest would even make Abbie Hoffman jealous!!!

Don’t you actually need boobs for this sort of thing to have any real impact? It might as well be skinny dudes without shirts up there.

[...] While all this was going on, two NYU girls from the group (and online blog) Feminist Ninjas showed up and doffed their tops to show solidarity with the freedom fighters inside fighting for their vegan lunches. I guess I can see the connection between full disclosure and going topless but it really just seemed like another group trying to get in on the fame, specially when you look at the pics of them trying to look all arty and vintage counter culture with their cigs. (Yes yes, while this is a family blog I would never deprive the Pones from a justifiable reason to look at tits (albeit NYU tits). Photos are HERE. NSFW.) [...]

clearly the protest is not sexual in nature and whether (Keri) is flat chested or not is neither here not there and her explanation of the actions is eloquantly states.
on a sexual note i don’t have a problem with here having the tits of a 12 year old – she’s a slim girl and shows them off nicely.

This brings whole new meaning to Tits or GTFO.

Keri Lyons,
whatever the real message, i have a some time for this. your skin looks nice and you do have nipples. i can crassly fantasise that 1) the journalist is having a good look and 2) maybe you should be embarassed that you’ve left nothing to the imagination and shown the world how flat your chest is.
If u have to protest something y go topless u dont need to do that. There are little boys and girls that will be looking up to those same two girls in he future. Also in the 1900s when women were trying to gain equal rights they protested and they did not expose them selves. Girls you can gain attention some other way trust me.

I believe that these girls had a sincere motive to affect positive change through their actions… If they were simply bimbo’s looking for attention through nudity, they would have picked a much more recognizable, simple, and generic cause as the reason for their display. OK, this is where the post will get a bit militant… As a med. student, I am astounded everyday by the average American’s downright neurotic aversion to seeing a naked human body. This is the saddest form of bullshit social conditioning… We all have them in one form or another people, DEAL WITH IT!!!! Please pull your idiotic heads out of repressive ideologies that have been PROVEN to be fictitious (i.e. christianity), and look at the issues that are supposed to be accentuated through this public display. I swear, every time I see humans condone horrible violence yet condemn a pair of publicly displayed breasts, I lose a little more faith in our species as a whole. So to all who have ignored the actual issues and prefer to simply shout out names like “whore” and express disgust, please do us all a big favor: DON’T BREED, EVER!!!! By the way, props to the girls who participated
