For those of you who dream of living with a member of the opposite sex in an NYU dorm next year…well, your wishes may not come true. With the closing of Water Street at the school year’s end, NYU’s only option for mixed-sex housing will disappear along with the inconveniently located dorm.
Not that it’s causing much consternation among the students. Even the students I spoke with who claimed to appreciate the mixed-sex option showed halfhearted support at best. “I don’t think there’s any problem with it,” said Shanti Leon Guerrero, a CAS sophomore. Other students, like CAS sophomore Ruchi Sharma felt that it shouldn’t even be an issue. “I think NYU has to focus on other things,” she said.
But all hope is not lost for students who feel more strongly about the matter. The IRHC recently released a survey with the intent of gauging student interest in mixed-sex housing, as well as other specialty housing options. If a strong interest in mixed-sex housing exists, IRHC will work to keep such an option available.
But can the survey accurately gauge student interest in specialty housing? It’s doubtful.
