If you’ve been following city news in the past few weeks, you’ve read about Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s push for the removal of term-limits. Well, our mayor got his wish. After two days of heated debate followed by a week of deliberation, the New York City Council voted last Thursday to revise the term-limits law, allowing Bloomberg to make a third mayoral bid.
During the hearings, many of Bloomberg’s buddies testified on his behalf, including former New York governor Mario M. Cuomo who praised Bloomberg as “spectacularly well-suited to the task” of leading New York City out of the financial crisis. What I found most interesting, however, was that one of Bloomberg’s supportive pals was NYU’s very own John Sexton.
Oh JSex, whatever shall we do with you?According to the Washington Square Park blog, JSex attended the hearings on Friday, October 17th, asking the Council to vote in favor of Bloomberg’s proposal, calling it an “act of bravery” if they did so. Furthermore, when asked about cynicism from the public if the Council did overturn two public referendums (that had established term-limits), JSex replied that he was concerned about the cynicism, but the Council should go ahead and do it anyway.
I wasn’t there at the hearings, but what I’ve read certainly seems like it would come from our president. Have you ever heard his ‘glocal’ speech? Or, you know, heard him speak at all? He’s a fan of grandiose ideas, which are ultimately confusing and often contradictory. (My favorite is the “university of the other.”)
NYU is already public enemy #1 community-wise(or maybe it’s #2), but really, who cares? As long as we got our buddy Bloomberg in office, we’ll be well off. But will he actually be in office for a third term? 89 percent of New Yorkers thought that (another) referendum on term-limits was the way to go. Bloomberg decided to go through the City Council. Will voters be pissed?
Maybe.
Regardless, even if sugar daddy Bloomberg is dethroned, we’ll always have the Sheikh.

I’ll preface by saying I know this isn’t what you’re doing at all, but I don’t understand people complaining about what Bloomberg has done. Besides which, term limits are about the least democratic thing in existence.

If only David Simon was at the meeting.
This would have made a fantastic episode of The Wire.
At least Boomberg owes NYU a favor now.
