Bobst “Phase II” Renovations to Begin Next Month
NYU announced last week that the “Phase II” of Bobst renovations, which will cost more than $10-million, are scheduled to begin immediately after the semester ends next month. According to current plans, floors four and five will be modified into a “research commons for a 21st century scholarship.”
What exactly does that mean? Apparently, that’s just a fancy way of saying “less depressing study space.” According to this press release, the new commons will:
- Restore the best aspects of architect Philip Johnson’s late 1960′s design to provide visually attractive and stimulating spaces, especially views and natural light, amid open stacks.
- Create a range and mix of reader spaces that foster quiet individual work; group study; collaborative work; and efficient use of technology.
- Situate staff and services for optimal interaction with readers, and for staff effectiveness.
- Enable efficient way-finding and reader self-sufficiency.
- Improve lighting, acoustics, HVAC, access to electrical outlets, furnishings and traffic patterns to maximize reader comfort and productivity.

Students Evacuated from Gallatin
Lily Q is reporting that students are being evacuated from the Gallatin building at 715 Broadway. It’s unclear whether this is a simple fire drill or not. We’ll update with more info as it comes in.
UPDATE: There are fire trucks on the scene. Staff writer Andy Heriaud sends this photo:

NYU May Expand No Smoking Areas
Smoking in dorm courtyards was banned last month, forcing none-too-pleased students onto the streets for their 2am smoke. Now, NYU may start insisting that you and your cigarettes back further away, filthy peasants. The possibility of imposing a 15 foot restraining order of sorts between smokers and NYU building entrances, exits and air vents is currently on the table Incendiary download.
We’ll get a little bit of pro/con going on this idea in upcoming posts and [hopefully] in the comments. For now though, submit your thoughts and suggestions to NYU on this website and vote in our poll.

L Train Delayed After Person Killed at 1st Ave Station
Before you start bitching about L train delays, Gothamist is reporting that someone jumped in front of the train this morning and is now dead Mad the download. According to the MTA, “Due to a police investigation at the 1st Avenue Station, there is no L train service in both directions between the Bedford Avenue Station and the 8th Avenue Station. Please expect delays in L train service at this time.” That means Williamsburg commuters are stuck on campus; expect the campus hipster level to stagnate until the MTA gets this resolved.
Update: 1010wins.com (and NYU Local reader Chris Kennedy) reports that “train service on the line, which was suspended for nearly 1 1/2Â hours in both directions, has resumed.” A 49-year-old man was pronounced dead at the 1st Ave. Station. (via Gawker)

Is James Franco in Queer Cinema 101?
A tipster reports that James Franco is taking Queer Cinema, an undergraduate course in the Tisch Cinema Studies department Without a paddle natures calling download. Franco was said to have set off a mild frenzy when he showed up at the department floor. (Surprising, seeing as NYU students usually try to play it cool with, “Haley Joel Osmont? He’s actually a really sweet guy… I smoked with him once.”) His name is on the roster as James Edward Franco, though we’re told he already missed his first class. Franco – get it together.

Obama and Clinton Dine in the West Village
A huge portion of the West Village, right near Kimmel, is currently blocked off so that none other than President Obama (reportedly along with former President Clinton) can enjoy a lovely meal at ninanyc for the heads up. NYULocal Publisher Cody Brown took the pic below from his apartment window. Interviews with policemen plus more pictures hopefully to come.

NYU Slashes Bus Services
Class of 1999 download.jpg” alt=”NYU Bus” title=”NYU Bus” width=”150″ height=”150″ class=”alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-13956″ /> In addition to the loss of free printing, it seems NYU is cutting costs by scratching out another beloved service to students – a sensible bus service.
Washington Square News reports that the five bus routes formerly in operation have been reduced to two, and NYU has not yet mustered up the guts to make a formal announcement.
According to the WSN article, routes A, C and D have disappeared. Route B that used to cover just the dorms in SoHo now caters to Greenwich Hotel. Route E doesn’t go to Union Square anymore, but does make a stop by 1st Ave. and 12th Street. If you live at the 13th Street dorm it is actually quicker to walk home from campus than anywhere on the new transportation map, which incidentally has not been updated yet.

We’re Back and We Missed You
It’s 8 Stay alive download.15 and I’m awake. There’s almost nothing good about that sentence except maybe the “awake” bit, which the truly optimistic and desperate might point out means that I’m not technically dead. But beyond having made it another day, I’ve got class in 30 minutes, the weather is drizzly and gross and things are looking bleak.
Welcome, everyone, to the harsh adjustment period between summer and the 100s of pages of weekly reading that we call school. In a few days, most of us will have gotten over the shock of a summer so quickly departed and that beginning of the year desire to pay attention in class and do our homework. And once you put down those newly-purchased pens and shiny spiral notebooks, instead locating someone to leech notes off of for the rest of the year, we’ll be here. And we’re just as dedicated as ever to giving you guys something to read while pretending to take notes on your laptop in class*.
In order to aid us in this task, we’ll be rolling out a host of new site columns and features over the next few days. From Tuesday Tracks to Sex Diaries and ever-updating info about events around the city, we’ve got you covered. Happy first day back, stop by often and we’ll do our best to keep it interesting.
*NYU Local does not technically recommend ignoring your boring Nat Sci lecture to read about a badass concert that you won’t want to miss next time around. But we can’t really stop you from exercising your own free will, can we?
