If there’s one thing we love doing, it’s obsessively fidgeting with our technological devices of choice in class, but now we can play around with snazzy new ones between classes. When I found out Wired Magazine was opening their annual popup Wired Store on the corner of West 4th Street and Broadway — essentially on NYU’s campus — I was ecstatic. How ecstatic? It only opened this past Friday and I’ve already been there twice.
The sparsely populated entrance lobby may make it seem there isn’t much to see, but the store is 3 floors filled with Android phones, iPads, 3D televisions, video game consoles, and much, much more. Best of all, pretty much everything is available for you to fool around with.
The main highlight of the ground floor is a metallic piano, with all of its hammers floating high above your head. There’s also shower karaoke, where you have a chance to win a new shower set from Kohler, and a pizza cutter resembling Star Trek’s Starship Enterprise.
The upper floor mostly features TVs showing new Blu-Ray releases, most notably, Back to the Future and Doctor Who. (I was lucky enough to be there at just the right time to see Marty McFly rock “Johnny B. Goode” in high-def!)
But best part of the store is the basement. Among other things, there’s a chalkboard ping-pong table, a bunch of 3D TVs, PlayStation Move, Xbox 360s, and a Lego Star Wars chessboard. Yes, you did read that last part right. Definitely take the time to try out Kinect, Microsoft’s new controller-less, motion-sensing peripheral for the Xbox 360 if you haven’t had the opportunity — it’s sort of a mind-blowing experience to play a video game by doing nothing but moving your own limbs.
Be on the lookout for the black refrigerator on each floor. They all contain free Arizona beverages, though ironically, they’re all warm.
The Wired Store is open Wednesday through Sunday, and will only be open until December 26, so be sure to get there before the end of the semester! (Good thing it’s probably less than a minute’s walk from all of your classes.)
Oh, and don’t forget to grab your free December issue of Wired on your way out — they’re pretty hard to miss. There are also free copies of the Wall Street Journal, but we all know newspapers are dead.
