Obama To Lose BlackBerry, Happiness

You have to wonder if Barack Obama is questioning his decision to run for president. The New York Times reports that he will probably have to give up his BlackBerry because of concerns over email security. Those concerns, in addition to the Presidential Records Act, which subjects any Presidential correspondence to public review, might mean that Obama won’t become the first president to send email, either.

It will probably be a difficult transition for Obama, since he’ll have to push just to get the first laptop into the Oval Office. (It would sure be odd to see a glowing Apple logo atop the desk in Oval Office photo-ops).

But there’s no doubt Obama is part of the wired generation. If you haven’t already heard, he will be delivering a weekly YouTube address (see, fireside chat) during his transition into the White House and beyond. You can watch the first one here.

By the way, Obama shouldn’t feel too bad about giving up his BlackBerry. He can really finish off John McCain by shedding McCain’s brilliant invention. And now he won’t be as likely to divorce Michelle.

I completely agree that he should be able to keep his BlackBerry. Being in the presidential bubble is one of the pitfalls of the office. There’s a way for him to view-only or respond only in routine fashion that can keep Obama out of legal or security risks by using a BlackBerry. If you’re wondering how President-elect Obama will deal with the unpleasant withdrawal symptoms from his CrackBerry addiction, my tongue-in-cheek letter to President-elect Obama has some answers on how he can cope: http://www.justmypointofview.wordpress.com.
